Canines bust a move

Think your Tuffy has what it takes to run with the big dogs? Then check it out for yourself at the Miami Obedience Club’s four days of agility trials, where canines of every size and shape compete for the chance to be named top dog, and attempt to run off with some cash. Unlike regular dog shows where a fancy coiffure, a jaunty gait, and a proud demeanor can haul in a blue ribbon, the agility trials require speed, nimbleness, and smarts under pressure. Watch as pooch after pooch tackles a timed obstacle course that includes navigating a balance beam, crawling through tunnels, and weaving around poles like a downhill skier. The trials are open to all breeds, from basset hounds to greyhounds, but since it’s an AKC event, it’s for purebreds only. And with five different size groups, from 8- to 24-inches tall, and three levels of expertise — novice, open, and excellent — there’s room for competitors ranging from the first-time dachshund to the seasoned Great Dane. Come see Rover run, but leave your noncompeting pup at home. The trials run from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. today; 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. tomorrow through Sunday at Tropical Park Equestrian Arena, 7900 SW 40th St. Admission is free. Call 305-554-7334. -John Anderson
Chill with the water

During what might be a short respite from a barrage of hurricane scares, you should take to the water before it takes you. The Black Point Sunset Canoe Tour, going on from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. off the Black Point Marina (24775 SW 87th Ave., Cutler Ridge), might help you to relax. Paddle around mangrove islands while you check out marine life and avoid mosquitoes. (Instead of swatting at them with your paddle, try using insect repellent.)
