Remember the seedy raunchiness of Coconut Grove’s Hungry Sailor and how cool it was to sit in its dark environs and guzzle ice-cold Red Stripes to the sounds of a live reggae band? It took a while, but someone has finally filled the void left by its absence: South Miami’s Bougainvillea Tavern has partnered with Lion Surf Shop to host Reggae Tuesdays.
J.P. Jam provides the sounds, and the bar hooks it up with discounted island-theme drinks. While the Boug is a considerable notch above the Sailor in class, its quirky, coastal decor is an anomaly among the muted trendiness of the surrounding area. There’s indoor and outdoor seating available, and both areas are within comfortable earshot of the music.
