For a city weaned on ultrahard and percussive club music, the soft, earthy productions of Andy Caldwell can sound as if they’re from another planet. And they are — San Francisco, to be exact, where deep house never died and locals pride themselves on nurturing a positive and supportive dance scene. Caldwell has been a part of the Bay Area landscape for years, issuing recordings through Naked Music, Om, and other small imprints, and co-founding Soulstice, a downtempo band that threatened to break into the mainstream with its 2001 debut, Illusions. He currently runs his own label, Uno Recordings. This is his second trip here in a little more than two months, thanks to Lust4House, a similar-minded collective of true house believers who throw a jam on the first Saturday of every month at Blue.
