It seems a lifetime ago when Madlib unveiled his Quasimoto creation on The Unseen. Since that 2000 classic, the prolific LA musician has replicated its bugged-out, nearly psychedelic jazz-soul sounds on countless recordings, including last year’s acclaimed collaboration with MF Doom as Madvillain. The long-awaited The Further Adventures of Lord Quas isn’t operating in the same vacuum as its predecessor. Its seemingly random, marijuana-influenced blur of beats and Quas’s helium vocals and light lyrical strolls on the wrong side of tracks lead to a staggering 27 songs, ranging from loopily brilliant to monotonously indulgent, in a little over an hour. The familiarly weeded weirdness of this raw and bloated disc should serve as a not-unpleasant puzzle for Madlib fans to dissemble.
