Luke for Miami mayor!

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness once made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke lays out his ideas to fix Miami's inner city neighborhoods.

While it was nice to see Tony Crapp Jr., an African American who has grown up in Miami, become the first black city manager since Howard Gary, we still have a long way to go in addressing the problems that plague Overtown and Liberty City. We need Miami's elected officials to follow my advice.

First, the city and the county police departments must place more officers in black neighborhoods during the hours that criminals come out. We need to see more mobile command centers on NW 15th Avenue between midnight and 3 a.m. I think both police forces can come up with an effective community policing strategy that will make Overtown and Liberty City residents feel safe when officers are in the hood. Put more of them on bicycles and horseback — like the ones in Brickell, Little Havana, and downtown Miami — in black communities. Add more police who care about these black neighborhoods and who will have a friendly dialogue with the people.

We also need city and county officials to go after the slumlords. If Miami Beach and Coral Gables can find a way to hold property owners accountable for maintaining their buildings, Miami can do the same. Give Crapp the green light to crack down on these slumlords. Come in and rebuild every property on NW 15th Avenue and the surrounding neighborhoods. And please provide jobs so we can feel pride in our community.

I recently went on a trip through a black neighborhood in Athens, Georgia, that used to be nothing but projects. Now, it is a beautifully landscaped and gated community. And there are no people selling drugs in the streets. Why? Because the residents took part in building it. I'd love to see city and county mayors implement similar ideas here.

I have a plan for the schools. We need to have three types of them: one for kids who plan to attend college, one for those who don't, and a third for the knuckleheads. A big reason F-schools exist is that you have a lot of knuckleheads bringing good students down.

These are realistic goals. If our leaders don't see fit to implement them, then I'll be forced to run for mayor myself.

I don't agree with your plan for schools. I know this was 3 years ago, but I stumbled across this article today and I have to put my two cents in. I do not agree that we should have a school for kids who want to go to college, kids who don't, and 'knuckleheads'. This is basically just telling these kids (especially the ones in the last two groups) that they will never amount to anything. School should be a place that inspires you to become better and shoot for goals you didn't think you would ever have. School should not be a place where you are segregated based on how much people think you will amount to when you're a child. http://www.swfvegas.com/tropical.php

yeah, where you going to get these jobs from? they have been exported to china and india. your "super negro" (your words for barack obama aka barry soetoro) continues to kiss up to china and the like. and, as far as the police, policing the "hood", when they try to they are accused of being racist. same goes for code enforcement that try to condemn buildings or change building code to enhance the eye sores that exist in the black community. id love to see you run, and become mayor. but, i have a feeling you would blame every short coming on the racist whites and latins that reside in the gables and brickell. get to where you want to go, then once you are there use the previous administration, and all social injustices as to why you cant make good on all the promises you make. just like our current president.

He's got one, Carlos... and it's obvious you enjoy reading his articles or you certainly wouldn't be responding to them in any fashion. Maybe if you had a life, you would be at work rather than reading what Uncle Luke has to say in the Miami New Times, huh? :) Lynching? nigga? I'm sure you can converse on a more intellectual level than that, Carlos; then again, maybe not. Afterall, nigga's aren't people of any color, but rather people of a very low mentality, like yourself. You're disgusting.

Luke, although I agree with some parts of your overall idea to promote a clean and safe residential area for the Overtown and Liberty City zones. I am going to disagree with you on placing the weight, or responsibility of your idea on Government. Did you mention provide jobs? and have Government clean up? The last time I heard about this Government intrusion on residents of any city, the country became a socialistic regime. I agree with somethings, but I don't agree on hand outs, and having Government hold your hand. The residents, those that care for a prosperous hood and opportunity, need to get involved. If you see someone selling dope, stilling, committing any crime in the hood....as a resident, as a citizen, as a proud participant to promote a safe and clean neighborhood for all, or anyone who cares, should stop it by all or any legal and civilized means possible. For one; tell a cop, tell a neighbor, tell your community leaders. If they don't listen, tell them again and again. O YA you a snitch!!!!! Okey, I am, If thats what or how you want to describe me as, but you as an individual, should take it personal. Would you let family members be influenced with the consequences which a drug dealer brings to YOUR HOOD? Murders, prostitution, theft, fraud, burglaries, and robberies, and the list goes on and on. My point is that the people need to come together. Take a stance on the issues. It wont be easy. You can't be relying on Government to hold your hand and feed you to. Take a close look at what is happening downtown. The more you let people become dependent on government, the more Government power over the people, and the more dependancy of the people on Government. The amount of homeless in Overtown and Liberty City has doubled in the last two years. The crime rate has become overwhelming. Many of those Homeless people, admittedly, have issues that prevent any "normal" improvement in their lives, but many have the ability and the know how on working and holding jobs. If an immigrant can have his own landscaping network upon arrival, why is it that someone getting help from the Government, with free medical, food stamps, and housing, at the expense of the tax payers, can't hold a job? Lets stop looking for excuses and implement the solutions. Yet another example of how to clean up is police in the hood. However, the community is outraged that the cops have been involved in 12 shootings in a few months. I agree with you. Police has to set a tone of civility. But when they are out people need to take over. Government has reacted to their request and now they can,t stomach the reality and what it takes to bring the civility back to a community which is in a down trend. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Make sure the officers that get hired for the area are black. The residents there don't like the white officers. They are the ones primarily doing all the enforcement. They are primarily the ones that get hurt or killed

I agree with u Luke about the "SLUMLORDS". This is one of the biggest issues right now in the black community. People owning property and not taking pride in maintaining it. The city doesn't care about doing anything either. People dump garbage all in front of their houses, abandon buildings everywhere and if a concern citizen complain to the city, there is nothing done about the problem. The city doesn't care about keeping the black neighborhood clean man. They need to clean up some of these abandon buildings and landscape the area. I bet if they do this they will be surprise about the reduction in crime that will happen. Cleanliness in next to godliness

Yeah, its all the slumlords fault. A good friend of mine, desperate for work, took a job with a company to fix those rat holes and told me that his 9mm was cocked on his lap, everyday, driving to work. Freaking animals always staring him down, making stupid threatening comments because they are animals and, oh yeah, gun shots are heard even throughout the day. Hence, why he was always carrying. Look at the survey crew from last week -in the middle of broad day light! Too bad only one was wounded. Remember, you can not polish a turd.

Perhaps the Gables have no slum lords because of the ordinance and code enforcement levied against them if they let their properties deteriorate. For some cities, it's about the aesthetics; outward appearance of the communities, not the quality of living for the people.

Lady Goo

I agree with your statement that, the people need to take over in the absense of police protection in the Overtown and Liberty City communities, Dcella, as well as several other statements you've made in response to Uncle Luke's article. However, if the people in these communities were to organize an endeavor to this effect, they certainly need to be spiritually and emotionally armed to deal with the reprecussions of attempting to right the wrongs committed by those with a depraved mind and possibly a reprobate heart! Wickedness will retaliate with a swift vengence and this is possibly why many do not want to get involved or be known as "snitches". In order to overturn crime, the heart of man has to be overturned; for it "..is wicked above all, who can know it!" {Matthew 15:19-20; Jeremiah 17:9; Ephesians 6:6} The most important participants in cleaning up crime in any community are the pastors and Christians. The Word of God needs to be taken into the harvest, like Jesus said to do {Matthew 10}, instead of expecting lost souls (minds) to make the choice to find refuge from the wickedness that so easily besets them in "the box" (temple). In all of the communities where crime is rampant, the moral codes of God are being broken; i.e., "thou shalt not steal..., kill..., covet..." Jesus fulfilled those moral codes/laws and gave only two new ones; i.e., "love God with all your heart, soul (mind), and strength, and love your neighbor as you love yourself". In doing these, we, too, have fulfilled the law. How? Simple. If I love you, I won't kill you; if I love you, I won't steal from you; etc. The key word in the second new law is "as". God knows man loves himself; so, we are to love each other "as" we love ourselves. Government is put in place to govern! If the people get involved, a local grassroots form of governance would inevitably have to be formed; whether it be a neighborhood watch group, vigilantes, or cameras on every corner of every street. Many people in these communities are not exercising their ability to break the generational curses that are upon their families; there are 4, 5 and 6 generations of people living in the projects! They're not being encouraged to do better. The complaints and faulting other ethnic groups for supposedly holding them down is a poor excuse for a lackadaisical attitude towards taking the initiative to push forward into a brighter future. The laws of the land help in applying a measure of discipline to curtail crime, but in many instances, it just makes the criminal even more hardcore after a stint in jail or a negative encounter with law enforcers. The heart of man is wicked and covetous, to name a few. It takes a conversion of the heart in order to bring about the choice to strive to do good in all sincerity. Man inherited Adam's sin nature through his disobedience in the Garden of Eden. He died spiritually, just like God said he would. If you think he didn't, just look at the news; better yet, watch a two year old when challenging the will of the parents for something he/she wants and can not have. You don't have to teach a two year old how to be bad! :) As soon as a child is able to talk, the parent should be praying the prayer of faith with them for the salvation of the Lord. For this, Jesus explained to Nicodemus, "you must be born again!" (John 3:5-8) and in Revelations 3:20 He explains that if you open your heart to Him, He will come in! :) Many that have been incarcerated and had a born-again experience, came out transformed; not by law, but by love... the perfect love of God in Jesus Christ! I've heard testimonies of men trading their weapons for Bibles after being witnessed to by someone who loves the Lord enough to take it to the harvest! Like me... :) So, Praise the Lord, all things are possible to him that believes and trust me, with God, nothing is impossible! {Luke 18:27} :)

True, not everyone is a slumlord. But the people who are trying to make it better need help. Go to Liberty City and Overtown now and look at all the Graffiti that all these little young d*ckheads have been putting all over the place. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEANING THAT UP? WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SURE WE HAVE LAWS TO MAKE SURE THESE LITTLE THUGS WILL BE SENTENCED TO HARD LABOR WHEN THEY ARE CAUGHT DESTROYING PROPERY? LUKE FOR MAYOR

Obviously, you do not know the definition of a "slumlord" and, therefore, you agreeing with Luke is not surprising. I have been living in Miami for 37 years and the rhetoric for that cesspool has not changed and never will. You think, maybe, the problems in that area are more of a cultural issue - one the government can not cure? Blame everything and everyone else, so typical for failures!

I know the meaning of slumlords. I see them everyday around my way. I buy these run down buildings and rent them out for cheap not caring about the aesthetics of the place. Most of these landlords don't even live in Liberty City or Overtown so they don't care. Granted, there are some people who try their best to keep the neighborhood clean but the city is not helping by cleaning up the graffiti or knocking down abandon buildings that have been sitting around for years. The city should do something about these bloodsuckers taking from the neighborhood and not putting anything back.
