Everybody Cut Loose

All he wanted to do was dance. No, not Billy Elliot. Kevin Bacon as Ren in Footloose, or as we like to call it, Flashdance in farm country. No one has since matched the euphoria of Bacon doing axels off tractors. Despite his manic dancing, though, Footloose was panned when it came out in 1984. Its saving grace was the soundtrack: Quiet Riot’s “Bang Your Head,” John Mellencamp’s “Hurts So Good,” Foreigner’s “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” Deniece Williams’s “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” Shalamar’s “Dancing in the Sheets,” Mike Reno’s “Almost Paradise,” and, of course, Kenny Loggins’s “Footloose.” We’re pretty sure Coast 97.3 FM just plays the soundtrack on repeat. This Friday at 7 p.m. at the Gusman Center’s Olympia Theater, however, you can once again see the cheesy scenes that inspired the soundtrack. The last in the Gusman’s Flickin’ Summer Movie series, Footloose begins with a happy hour and ends with a giant dance party. Tractors not included.
