  • Tea Time At Starbucks

On January 3rd, Starbucks rolled out a quintet of new Tazo full leaf tea beverages that are now available in all stores nationwide. Yesterday the coffee chain hosted "TeaTime events", which is a civilized way of saying "free samples". I headed to the most scenic of our Starbucks, at 14th Street and Ocean Drive, where store manager Christian García graciously offered me tastes of all five. Two of the new drinks, Berry Chai Infusion and Apple Chai Infusion, are made by steaming black tea with fru

  • 30-Year-Old Whiskey in Its Prime

Psssst....Drink Me!It isn't often that we New Timesers get a bottle of $200 whiskey in the mail. We did, not long ago, thanks to the folks at Canadian Club, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year with the release of a primo 30-year-old, 80-proof, white-oak-barrel-aged blended whiskey retailing for a cool two bills. That's priced well beyond the reach of even the most profligate New Times lushes; our admin assistant was obliged to hide the booze behind her desk, well beyond the reac

It was an afternoon filled with beer, beer, and more beer as Lake Worth's BX Beer Depot hosted its first Homebrew Fest, an intimate gathering where members of BX's Lagerhead Brewers Club shared their handcrafted creations with the public. There were nearly a dozen homebrew beers on tap at the tiled-topped bar behind the Depot -- from Belgian Wit to Imperial IPA to Hard Cider -- plus a booth where you could sign up for BX's homebrew classes, email lists, and club dates. And there was good company

  • Beer of the Week: Avery Reverend, Quadrupel Belgian Ale

In my beer travels, I've come across two types of beer drinkers. The first want a smooth, easy-going beer - something that they can drink without pushing their palate too much or leaving much of a flavor in their mouths. The later want a beer that's going to kick their ass by way of their G.I. track; one that pushes boundaries and makes them re-evaluate what they like, and don't like, about beer. OK, so there are probably a dozen other types of beer drinkers in between those two extremes. But I'

We all know instant coffee sucks, which is why Starbucks refers to its' new line of VIA coffee powder as "Ready Brew". Whatever you call it, both the extra bold Italian Roast (which I sampled in the store), and the mellower-but-still-potent Colombian (prepared at home) turned out to be startlingly Starbucksy in taste. Each packet gets mixed with 8-ounces of hot water and voilá: a rich, strong cup of coffee. Works just as well with cold water for a quick ice coffee. It's $2.95 for a 3-pack, $

Eggnog is one of those staples that should be voted off the holiday table. Really, is that warm, thick, egg-y beverage the best thing to drink with your holiday meal? Especially in this Miami heat? Eggnog originated in England and was brought over to America by the colonists. Originally made with eggs, milk, brandy or wine, the colonists switched over to rum when the English crown decided to tax brandy and wine. Now some recipes call for rum, some for bourbon, some for rum and bourbon. If you i
