Mass Shootings Prove Gun Buyers Should Be Drug-Tested

As a responsible gun owner, I am a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment. If an intruder comes into my home, you better believe I will defend my wife and son by any means necessary, including using Florida's "stand your ground" law. But we can't let the Republican Party and the NRA keep winning gun control battles in the wake of tragedies like the Aurora killings and Sikh temple massacre. I really don't understand people who oppose stricter requirements for obtaining a firearm. These are the same folks who believe in communist ideals such as gay-marriage bans and denying a woman's right to have an abortion. They care more about their ideology than the good of the republic.

Current gun laws certainly aren't stopping ruthless convicts from murdering innocents in inner-city communities such as Liberty City and Opa-locka. Getting guns is nothing like you'd think from shows such as Sons of Anarchy, where arms-dealing motorcycle gangs sell weapons to African-American bangers. It's a lot less complicated.

Instead, straw buyers with no felony convictions purchase the guns that end up in the hands of criminals terrorizing Miami-Dade public housing projects. It could be the criminal's baby mama. It could be a cousin who moved out of the hood. Or it could be a crackhead junkie who has yet to be tagged with a coke conviction.

C. Stiles

The straw buyer hands the weapon to the felon and later reports it stolen. Law enforcement agencies need to focus resources on investigating people who make these false reports. If a guy has reported 12 stolen guns, you should know something is wrong.

We should treat anybody who wants to buy a gun the same way Gov. Rick Scott treats welfare recipients. Potential gun owners should be required to pee in a cup. Someone who is popping antidepressants or snorting cocaine cannot be trusted with a gun. Once they've passed their drug test, they should have to take a psychiatric test.

These measures will go a long way to preventing more crazy gunmen like Aurora mass murderer James Holmes, racist Milwaukee killer Wade Michael Page, and Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford's shooter, Jared Loughner, from going on rampages.

Luther...you are the least read person i have ever had the misfortune of reading. All of your "stories" are full of innuendo and lack of truth. I feel everyone has the right to express their opinion weather i agree with it or not and i am happy to listen and try to understand, but you....you really accentuate the word laziness in everything you write. Abortion ban is a communist ideal???!!!! Since the 1920's  the USSR (The epitome of communism) has allowed abortions in all cases and they have never stated publicly they are against gay-marriage for that matter. You really need to research and know what you are writing about before you dumb the readers that you have fooled into trusting what you say.

There are over 20,000 laws, federal/state/local, regulating firearms.

- Straw purchases are illegal.

- Ownership of firearms by felons is illegal.

- Ownership of a firearm by a drug abuser is illegal.

Now tell me, Mr. Campbell, what new law would you propose based on your article that is not already on the books?

A criminal by his/her very nature is one who does not obey the law. In every major city in America where firearms are "banned", criminals and gang bangers use them everyday. What new law should those cities pass on top of their "bans".

Clearly, you did not think use logic while writing this clap-trap.

I love it when people mention the AWB.  You realize that it simply "banned" certain weapons based on mostly aesthetic features right?  Even then, there were pre- and post- ban models of these weapons available which got around the whole stupid regulations.  Read up on it.

Here's a fun fact: Bush didn't do away with the AWB - it EXPIRED on its own as it was only meant to last 10 years.  In fact, Bush said if a new one made it to his desk, he would sign the bill.  Another case of not performing a fact check before writing an article.  I'm not surprised, its a Miami New Times thing.

What if a drug or mental evaluation fails to tag someone as not being eligible to purchase a gun?  What measures do you propose then?  Oh, and if you REALLY want this absurd idea implemented, you should petition the ATF since FFLs (the acronym stands for FEDERAL firearms licence - that's short for a gun dealer if you didn't know) are, in fact, regulated by the federal government.

One more thing, you said you're a responsible gun owner?  How about that 1994 arrest of yours for threatening your girlfriend with a gun?  Responsible gun owners don't do that shit.

Weren't you charged with a FELONY for hitting someone in the face with a whiskey bottle? You sure have balls, you are the LAST person who should be talking about the right to keep and bear arms. You should have no such right.  Oh ya, you also got arrested for threatening your girlfriend with a gun. What a freakin hypocrite.Maybe you should be tested for writing something like these no wonder you are writing not singing or acting what would drug testing do nothing stay clean for 2 weeks them buy the gun and people that kill it will dosen't matter if they take drugs or not they will do what they set there mind to do

As a responsible speaker and writer, I am a staunch supporter of the First Amendment. If a bigot attempts hate speech in my presence, you better believe I will argue against this bigotry, including using my rights under the First Amendment. But we can't let the ACLU keep winning bad speech control battles in the wake of tragedies like TEA Party terrorists using the Internet to promote conservatism. I really don't understand people who oppose stricter requirements for public speaking, posting on the Internet, and writing newspaper stories. These are the same folks who believe in communist ideals such as questioning the current government and denying a person's right to never hear bad things. They care more about their ideology than the good of the republic.

No problem, then we should also start drug testing drivers, once a year at random.

This is a spoof, right? I mean nobody is actually seeking gun policy commentary from...Luther Campbell, are they? It's endlessly annoying when celebrities who routinely get a camera and a mic stuffed in their uneducated faces, feel that their political policy opinions (can't even say that with a straight face) are somehow qualified exclusively by their own inflated sense of self importance.....and literally NOTHING else. How dillusional can these people actually be, to believe, to truly believe that their opinion, on ANYTHING other than pop culture, is worth anything at all? Tell you what Luther, how about this. Go have someone read the Constitution to you, have them repeat the 2nd Amendment portion of it until it starts making sense. Here's another interesting concept. Criminals don't let "laws" get in the way. Whether its cocaine, murder, or, you guessed it, gun restrictions. The ONLY people affected by gun laws are those INCLINED TO OBEY THE LAW IN THE 1ST PLACE. Criminals and lunatics DON'T OBEY GUN LAWS NO MATTER HOW RESTRICTIVE. Kapeesh?

Curious as to the quantity of substances you have abused previously as well as your arrest record...here's a few highlights: ● Arrested in 1999 on assault charges for striking a college student, 18, in the face with a bottle of Jack Daniel’s at a club in Miami Beach. “The victim apparently was blocking Mr. Campbell’s view of a show…Words were exchanged, so Mr. Campbell took the bottle of whiskey and struck the victim.” ● Charged in 1994 with assault for threatening his girlfriend with a gun. Really??? With a gun??!!!!! And yet not only are you still allowed to own one legally, but you're going to preach to ME about who should and should not own one? You are a liar, a hypocrite and YOU are proven dangerous and irresponsible with a firearm...Trash like you are the very reason I own guns!

Mr. Campbell,

Your two solutions, drug and psychological are unconstitutional infringements of a civil right, the right to keep and bear arms, thank God!  I am so thankful that the Constitution stands between me and lame brained nanny-state ideas like yours.
