Global warming could put Turkey Point nuclear reactors under water

Warning: Global warming is a fact, and the results are already visible. Hurricanes are getting stronger; droughts and floods are more frequent. In South Florida, waters rose roughly six inches between 1930 and 1981. That might not sound like much, but it's just the tip of a rapidly melting iceberg. "We are the most vulnerable metropolitan area in the world when it comes to sea-level rise," University of Miami professor Harold Wanless says. And, the avuncular geologist adds, that's nothing.

"Another eight inches, and 65 percent of the county's water control structures will fail," he says. Salt water will seep across South Florida, destroying crops, corroding cars, and costing billions in damages. But eight inches is a drop in the bucket. Wanless expects South Florida seas to rise by at least four, probably six, feet by 2100. Still contemplating that beachfront condo so the grandchildren have a pad when your kids kick the bucket?

Consider: A two-foot rise would plunge 28 percent of Miami-Dade below water. Miami Beach would be reduced to Ocean Drive (shudder) as celebrities scramble to save their Star Island mansions. Same thing across the bay. Sayonara, city hall. Most worrisome of all, Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant would be an island in the newly created Sea of Homestead.

Although two new reactors at Turkey Point are being built at a higher elevation, Florida Power & Light has requested to keep the two current nukes running until 2035. Given that Hurricane Andrew almost inundated them in 1992, what will happen as oceans continue to rise?

"The standards will be 85 years old by then, and that's a problem," says Arnie Gundersen, a Vermont-based nuclear engineer and consultant. "If tidal waves knock out the water pumps" — as they did at the Fukushima reactor in Japan earlier this year — "you can have a meltdown."

FPL spokesman Michael Waldron says Turkey Point is safe and that the reactors are intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but "no one knows for sure what the climate change impact on sea levels will be 100 years from now."

A six-foot rise in ocean waters would be less dramatic than a meltdown, but almost as damaging, Wanless warns. Less than half of Miami-Dade would remain, and of the land still above water, 73 percent would constantly flood. "That's uninhabitable," he says. Eight feet higher, and Miami-Dade is an archipelago. At ten, it's Atlantis. But that's not even Wanless's worst-case scenario. If China and India continue to pump greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and Tea Party activists block environmental action, the seas could rise by an astounding 20 feet by 2100.

"It's not unforeseeable at all," Wanless says. "It's happened before."

Yeah, 130,000 years ago.

If you honestly believe that global warming is not happening, you are sadly mistaken. Not only is it still happening, but it will continually get worse as the years go on, since our leaders are obviously not courageous enough to stop putting this gas into the atmosphere and stop deforestation. For goodness sake, just use hemp for fuel and paper, problem solved. We wouldn't be in this hopeless situation if that were the case, period. They would rather destroy civilization as we know it than to make hemp legal, which doesn't even have any drug content to get high off of in the first place. Completely ridiculous

While this article proves several effect what global warming could do to Miami the second the rising waters inundate Turkey Point, the author failed to mention that global warming no longer exists! This was proven around Thanksgiving 2009 when the leaked UN emails revealed that many university professors from East Anglia University in England as well as from other universities around the world fudged the numbers regarding global warming. In fact, the author probably forgot to mention that we had one of the coldest winters this year & last year in South Florida. First, one should look at just how Al Gore & all of his believers have changed the tune from "global warming" to "global cooling" to simply "climate change." In fact, Gore has to constantly run away from the cameras & many of his detractors who are now calling him out on the whole global warming fraud. Further, Gore is so embarrassed by this scam that he himself cussed out the public on a symposium in climate change last month in Aspen. Speaking of which, if Gore is such a great character & hero for the global warming movement, why is he labeling global warming skeptics as "racists." It just seems to me that if anyone disagrees with the US president's policies or a fascistic trend such as global warming they are immediately labeled a racist. The author & a university professor mentioned that melting polar ice caps will cause a rise in sea levels which would then hinder the global ecosystem. Again, due to global cooling that we have had in the past 15 years (as shown in the leaked emails), the polar ice caps have expanded. And before you call me a fraud, please notice that it is quite a natural phenomenon for the polar ice caps to expand more in the winter & contract in the summer. Don't believe me? Put a block of ice, add some water to it, & then put in it in the freezer as opposed to putting that same block of ice under that sun. One will notice a major difference there. Another trend to spot in this global warming fraud is the increase is the five-fold increase in the polar bear populaton within the last 50 years. Gore & his eco-fascists police tell us that global warming will drown the polar bears when in fact polar bears can swim! They only based this argument on the case of two polar bears who drowned in the Arctic. In fact, the polar bear population havs exponentially grown so much that they are now a nuissance in the Arctic. On a related matters of animals located in the Poles, Gore & a few of his followers argues that global warming will drown penguins. This is an absurd statement as penguins are the fastest aquatic birds there is on Earth (some have labeled them "torpedoes in water"). I am not a scientist, but my resources are from reading lectures & listening to individuals who know a lot of about the subject. I recommend that you listen to Lord Christopher Monkton, a former member of Margaret Thatcher's cabinet & a lead scientist against Gore's global warming fraud. And if you wish to know the real motives behind the global warming scheme then I suggest that you watch the documentary "Endgame: Blueprint for Global Enslavement" either on Youtube or on DVD. The entire point of the global warming debate is to frame us thinking individuals as idiots. This why the ecofascists & Gore think that we are stupid by making such absurd statements. Please educate yourselves a little more before following such global warming lies or any other hoax propelled by government or a former government servant (yes, government serves us the the people, they are not officials).

thank you for the great comment, I was hoping to see someone else that knows what is really going on reply to this article. I feel bad for the others that are completely in the system. The techniques used to alter the way someone can view a subject is incredible, they take somewhat smart people and turn them into regurgitating zombies. I am very happy that more and more people know the truth. The truth will set you free.

For pity's sake, don't regurgitate every bit of antiscience propaganda you can find. Grow a brain, go to college, and get some education.

Don't expect anyone else to waste time responding to your delirious babblings, you idiot! Yes, you are an idiot, an appropriately defensive idiot, and you shouldn't blame others for seeing you as such,.

Yuck!

I read your comment again, and I have to say, oh yes you sound very educated, probably educated by the finest criminals money can buy. So as you flaunt your arrogance in everyone's face I want you to know that I dont view you as very smart. I think smart people have open minds and seek the truth. Smart people dont just accept what is taught to them as the truth, they search the truth them selves. Please read or research The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America and you might discover why you think the way you do.

Please try to be humble and nice to others as when you dont it really shows your bad side.

fellfeline, really, why do you insult the man for telling the truth, it is a fact not a fantasy that the global warming that is going on is happening all over our universe, our worlds are changing and it is not because of things that we are doing. No it is not ok to pollute and those corporations should be held accountable for what they are doing all over the world, but lets be very honest here, Al Gore is a man that made a good movie and that is what it is a movie, with all the drama and special effects, he could have made a movie about french fry eating zombies and he still would have made a great movie, please remember that you cannot believe everything you see on TV. His track record has proven that he is a criminal taking money from the big bad guys. If you do your homework you will see that all that norbis sanchez listed is true, but if you want to just call people names, well that will not change the fact that he is right. I am sorry that you believed a commercial but that is what it was Al Gore is a commercial. We have serious issues going on and you should not waste your time defending the man that does not give a crap about you. I was one a believer in Global warming, I thought that it was our fault our world was falling apart with all our pollution, but then I started to do my homework and found out that it was all a big lie, it was hard for me to accept as I was shown over and over the pollution and that it was causing the global warming, and if I did not believe in global warming it was because I wanted to let the corporations pollute and that is just not true. I and no one that I know wants pollution, but we know that it is not causing global warming, how would you be able to explain the other planets having the same problems with their climates changing, this is not possible we cannot be causing problems in space. The entire thing is a sham. We are going to be taxed and the rich will not be. GE pays no taxes and their competition does, why is that? because they are buddies with they system.

So please dont just go around calling people names, facts are facts and they wont change just because you insult someone. I think that if you do some research with an open mind you will find the same information that we are typing about, then you will ask yourself, how is it possible you ever believed that other crap.

I understand how you would believe it, they are masters of deception.

I want to be a free American with out pollution and with out Al Gore selling me his poison contaminating crap products or without him taxing me to death,, the carbon taxes are real and only for us not the rich.

I hope you be nice to yourself and to others, really we all should be focused on whats happening in Japan rather than insulting each other. Japan is nuked to death and it is spreading everywhere.

Open your mind and free yourself!!!

Nice comment Norbis Sanchez!!!

Thank you very much for your kind comment, Mr. Gonzalez. Apparently some people are still zombies (or if you want to call them sheeples) & believe the mainstream propaganda "hook, line, sinker." They just get offended when they hear an opinion that is different & not mainstream & immediately want to shut it down rudely. If they cannot counter with an argument, then the name-calling & insults will come into play. By the way, when you previously "The Deliberate Dumbing Down" of America by Charlotte Iserbyt something told me you're very aware about infowars.com Pleasure to meet a fellow patriot. :)

Hit you where it hurts, Omar, you mastiff of duplicity. Thanks for barking at me.

Here's something from the "librul" media, The Washington Post for your education:

“The idea that we would put Americans’ economy in jeopardy based on scientific theory that’s not settled yet to me is just — is nonsense. I mean, it — I mean, and I told somebody, I said, just because you have a group of scientists that have stood up and said, here is the fact — Galileo got outvoted for a spell.”— Perry

We previously awarded Perry Four Pinocchios for his comments suggesting scientists were increasingly saying climate change was a fiction. We will note he repeatedly did not answer the question at the debate about whether he could name a scientist he thought was credible on the issue.

For your response could you please make up another fake Spanish name for me, so it looks like the Spanish community supports your arrogant, polluter-paid stupidity?

There is a new clean energy technology that is 1/10th the cost of any other energy technology. Don’t believe me? Watch this video by a Nobel prize winner in physics: http://pesn.com/2011/06/23/950...

Still don’t believe me? It convinced the Swedish Skeptics Society: http://www.nyteknik.se/nyheter...

LENR using nickel. Incredibly: Ni+H+K2CO3(heated under pressure)=Cu+lots of heat. Here is a detailed description of the device and formula from a US government contract: www.lenr-canr.org/acrobat/Gern...

Still don’t believe me? A major US corporation has bought the rights to sell the 1 megawatt Rossi E-Cat, and it will be announced late October in the US, with the unit hitting the market in November. How can any fossil fuel compete with such cheap energy (and clean to boot!).

By the way, here is a current survey of all the companies that are bringing LENR to commercialization: http://www.cleantechblog.com/2...
