Make it legal for consumption by means of personal growth only. If you want to smoke it, you have to grow it. Sell it and they throw the book at you.

imagine if there were a heaven and the lord said you could not enter because you knew marijuana is safer for you.but you still ignored to legalize it just to make a easy dollar off other medicine.cops have better things to do then waste there time with marijuana ,dirrect there attention to all these things that are more important, look at the satistics on marijuana cops will say dont put a another drug on the street well the fact is its already there.I rather have it in doctors hands then in law enforcement or street thug that can easily {spike the weed} spike- defention meaning adding some other drug to it for more customers.in doctors hands at least its monitored and taxed for because people dont want regular seedy bud they want hydroponict weed that mostly will only be grown by doctors.O r like i was 15 and said just take thc out rerange the chemicals make it legal which in all honesty can be worst.i only wirte because i rather try to legalize it the right way then to fight it the old way by just doing it anyways and getting in trouble for it.which in reality if i was the lord and could see that cops destroy your life because a plant is less dangerous then the alchol at the store and mean by destroying is giving you backround that keeps you from getting a good job which could lead to crime to just survive.people say dont do it at all well god says dont destroy another way of life that is more right then the one you are presenting such as alchol or asprine that can kill you.see you talk about murdering, we that actually are trying to get the right drugs that are good for you legalized you atre consently denying and in next realm or state of being when we die i dont want to be you probly have alot of enemys being a enemy of life.only sidefects of marijuana dihreaha, vomiting in some cases because not enough water intake, dehydration to much in one hour headach, possibilty of anxiety mainly because you get scared of cops because at the moment its illegal so you are worried on getting caught, but for cures numerous things like cancer, pain for back,legs,/arms atheritis, helps eople eat, helps people with sleep depravation, things like this are worth legalizing because its not just for medicaly usage but can be used for socilization with other people who do smoke truthfully long its not missed you some people cant handle it why some should not do it but dont be hatfule towards the ones that can use it.Maybe those can handle dont like beer or alchol only reason why they drink because it kills the pain but are goverment needs to wake up or its going to get alot worse if they steadly ignore the people.Just because your alredy rich doesnt mean you can hide from truth.

i have been told by several doctors, that if it were legal i would be on the list. i live in fl. i'm only legal in cali. sometimes i have to stay in cali at least a month. for treatment. it is what it is. the suffering. is unbearable. it makes me want to die. they know it's the medicine of all medicine. we have to suffer, because of their greed. to continue to control us and all that we do. it will improve our own money problems. the gov. can get out of dedt. people will finally be able to afford to live in this great country of ours. we the people are what matter. TAKE A STAND. IT IS GODS GIFT TO US. EVERYONE KNOWS THE TRUTH ABOUT. IT IS A MULTI-PURPOSE MEDICINE. you don't need to alter it to make it work. but everything else you have to alter.
pot is not harmful at all.

This is about patients getting safe access to medications they need, not about full legalization. When you want to stand up for an issue you believe in, be polite and respectful and people are more likely to listen to you.

Take it from me I got busted one time for holding my friends weed and next i know 2 other cops come up i mean come on there are murderers out there, its basically there way of getting out of the real work there suppose to do

I think its about time to legalize pot for "real" medical issues...I've had 7 surgeries and will never walk without pain....smoking takes the pain away and doesn't screw up your liver like all the heavy duty pain pills (which, by the way, IS killing people).....Yes, I am over 60 .....there is nothing wrong with a little weed to help with the pain.....and believe me....you are ALL going to reach a point in your life when you will have pain!!! Get real folks and legalize this SOON...

To Deadeye dick:
You stated (in part):
"If all the users here are honest about it (and can remember the time before they started using), they will admit that pot changes the way you think. Things that were morally unacceptable before you started using are now acceptable, maybe even desirable. Pot erodes your logic, and most certainly your morality (for that matter so does alcohol abuse)."
You might try substituting the word "pot" for the following,
1. Religion
2. Politics
3. Wealth
The real question is how much damage is done by these modes of thinking to the population at large. My guess is that any one of my three causes substantially more damage than pot.
For that matter, FDA approved drugs kill people every day. Legalizing pot will save lives, even if it just stops the unibrowed LEO's from murdering people in their homes for smoking flowers.....

Storm Crow 10/15/2010 1:36:00 AM
Deadeye, Byteme, David and the rest of you who oppose legal medical cannabis, I have a challenge for you! Run a single search for "Granny Storm Crow's MMJ Reference List" and educate yourselves! I dare you to read even just the titles of the studies and articles I have gathered! Then come back and tell us what you think!
And David, FYI, under normal conditions, 2nd hand cannabis smoke will NOT cause a positive drug test! Only if you happen to be exposed to very high concentrations in a confined space (like "hotboxing" in a car) will you test positive. Please read "Passive inhalation of cannabis smoke--is it detectable?" in the "Drug Testing" section of my list.
And since this is "Breast Cancer Month", may I suggest that all of you read a few of the studies like this one?
Antitumor Activity of Plant Cannabinoids with Emphasis on the Effect of Cannabidiol on Human Breast Carcinoma (full - 2006)
http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/318/3/1375.full
Or some of the news articles if you prefer the short version of the information-
Cannabidiol inhibits tumour growth in leukaemia and breast cancer in animal studies (news - 2006)
http://www.cannabis-med.org/english/bulletin/ww_en_db_cannabis_artikel.php?id=220#2
Cannabis compound cannabidiol CBD 'halts cancer' & may bring relive to other illness's (news - 2007)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7098340.stm
Please, educate yourself! Cannabis does far more than "just" relieve pain!
-
educated floridian 10/15/2010 1:17:00 AM
Concerned Floridian,
A few corrections to your statement.
Cannabis is not a "cannabionoid", it contains cannabinoids-such as THC, CBD and several hundred others, which our body contains ready made receptors for. These are not to protect the plant form animals and humans. In fact they show a synergy with humans.
It will not induce hallucinations leading to psychosis, silly.
Erectile dysfunction? Speak for yourself.
Reduced ability to metabolize nutrients? On the contrary, research shows a positive effect in treating gastro-intestinal disease such as Crohn's Disease.
Constrict blood vessels? No, that's nicotine. Cannabis dilates blood vessels, hence the red eyes and slight reduction in blood pressure.
Isn't it bad that big tobacco sells toxins? Yes, I agree with that. Cannabis on the other hand is safer than many foods we eat, having no know lethal dosage.
You can't say that about aspirin or even potatoes or drinking water, all of which have attainable lethal doses!

what the fuck is wrong with our government our country is getting close to being cashed and their aint much left we need a new plan to make money and jobs here an idea from what i understand marijuana is a billion dollar a year gimmick that's illegal so that's a billion dollars a year were losing and it cost even more money to police it plus putting pot heads in jail with child molesters murders and armed Robers all for a plant that growes on its own in the ground it seems to me that if our government cared about what happened to the country they would take a good long look at the situation and at least consider it im pretty sure that most of our government officials have at least tried weed in the past and even the president admitted to smoking weed in the past and hes the god damn president of the unit states so this is the way i see it im from floridsa oi grow enough weed to last the year in the falll i am in a wheel chair and my ass hurts and weed is tnhe only thin that helps me out all i can say is wow we keep voteing for these same dumb asses it dosent matter if its a republican or a demicrate they should combine and make the retard party

Eric 10/12/2010 11:15:00 AM
The legalization of pot is a step that the government should consider taking. Not only can marijuana produce billions in tax revenue if it was legal in Cafe Shops but think about this Hemp paper, Hemp oil, the list goes on, economically this should be great for our economy as well as environmentally (no more killing trees for paper and trees gives us oxygen so thats a good thing). Besides unlike alchoholics you cant overdose on weed, and every body would be chill and relaxed.......
-
Erica 10/12/2010 10:09:00 AM
I don't see mary jane as a harmful drug to anyone or nor this can be called a drug! People have to admit and sit there and tell the world this is one plant that isn't poisonous to the body and medical research its helped millions of people. Drugs are extasy, coke, crack, acid, crystal meth and all those hardcore substance can kill someone because the crap that's added into them. Weed!!? You add water for it to grow and soon you know it the plant is budding now all you have to do is get rolling paper. I will have to say it has helped me over the years, at the age of 12 I was told by the doctor I had 2 Cyst in my ovaries and they wanted to take one out of me and give me a crap load of pills. I had 3 incidents of close to OD, i stop taking pills and now mary jane has been my friend. No more cyst!

Wow, the people on this website are cruel to each other. America needs to fire every single individual in any elected office in America. Federal Legislative and the Executive branches as well as all state and municipal offices. Since the beginning of our freedom from England the Rothchilds and the Morgan's have sought to gain control of our government and now they have it. The Federal Reserve Bank is all smoke and mirrors. If you are interested in the truth about our government read, The Web of Deceit by Ellen Hodges Brown. You won't find the truth in any of our history books.
I think everyone has been affected by a drunk driver but I have never seen a death from Marijuana use. I do believe that a large portion of the higher educated people in the world have smoked and most still do so recreationally. Our jails are full of people that do not belong there, I don't have a problem with you hating the drug but don't hate the people. If we spent more time arresting the violent crimes and less time and money running down people who actually work and pay taxes it would be a much better world.
Peace to you all. And do try and respect other peoples opinions even if they are misguided.

The way to change the world is to change people's minds. As more and more people openly discuss the fact that "God" and "Allah" are completely imaginary, the world becomes a better place. The people who believe in "religion" look sillier and sillier. Eventually, religion becomes a fringe activity that is meaningless.
Whenever anyone says "God," we should reply, "God is imaginary."

I don't smoke pot but I know that it would generate state tax, create jobs and a few puffs for some folks would just calm their abutts and maybe they would be less hateful. I would much rather see marijuana legalized and happy hour illegal. Booze kills and pot is a natural herb and if used correctly, calms, heals and juices up creative minds :) peace

Concerned Florida wrote: "Marijuana is a cannabionoid, part of a group of chemicals called alkaloids, these are compounds produced by plants to protect themselves from humans and other animals, it will induce hallucinations and eventually lead to psychosis." Sorry to burst your bubble, but these cannaboids can be prescribed in the form of a pill called Marinol. Marinol has been tested extensively and there is absolutely no psychosis. Also - alkaloids are the basis of morphine and about 1,000 other medications available at your corner drugstore. So basically your point of view on this matter is hypocritical, ill informed, and makes no sense.

Marijuana is a cannabionoid, part of a group of chemicals called alkaloids, these are compounds produced by plants to protect themselves from humans and other animals, it will induce hallucinations and eventually lead to psychosis. Another effect is erectile dysfunction. Reduced ability to metabolize nutrients and constriction of blood vessels. Really legalize this? Isn't it bad enough that big tobacco gets away with selling toxins.

Robert Seoane 10/11/2010 12:23:00 AM
I found your article well written and informative and I trust that everything you've stated as fact to have been verified. But you cast doubt when you don't verify the small things. In your "Key dates In Pot History", you quoted a Beatles lyric as "Everybody smoke pot". The truth of the matter is they never sang that. You're quoting from the end of "I Am The Walrus" when the chorus chants "Everybody's got one." Your "I'd love to turn you on" quote was a bit weak too because the phrase has many interpretations. If you really would have wanted to quote the right Beatles lyric, it should have been "I get high with a little help from my friends".
It's frustrating to see printed items you know to be wrong. Please verify what you print more often. And if you don't have any true "Beatleologists" around your office, feel free to contact me next time and I'll set you straight.

Im 52 I suffer from a few heart and nervious conditions the doctor gives me Xanax and Linoxin to control my attacks, The xanax makes me feel like a zoombie while smoking pot truly helps me....Pot is all natural the hemp planet itself absorbs 5 times more carbon dixiode in the air...
Making these planet legal would help many, drinking alcohol is more of a problem them pot...
by making pot legal the state will stop rich individuals who smuggle or grow it illegally and now control and tax it. Pot is harmless non addictive, and most of all no side affects ...
Florida you spend millions if not billions making pot illegal, you can be making millions and saving millions legalizing this plant that honestly medically helps me..
I can buy pot anyday anytime so your efforts to stop pot isnt working...your waisting tax payers money...
pot is harmless and truly helps medically..
and to that guy that pot changes your personality...in my case Pot makes me see the big picture in life..

Skrew you stoners and skrew this worthless rag of a magazine trying to promote legalization. Your trying to convince everyone that pot is the golden path to happiness. Listen stupid, no hallucinogenic drug is harmless, legal or not. Growing up, I've seen and known plenty of people who were so whacked out on weed that they couldn't drive for krap, and I don't want my kids getting in a car with them for one thing. Sell your BS to people who will care. I will fight you tooth and nail to prevent legalization, and you users and sellers can rot in jail.

Legalization is a mistake. If all the users here are honest about it (and can remember the time before they started using), they will admit that pot changes the way you think. Things that were morally unacceptable before you started using are now acceptable, maybe even desirable. Pot erodes your logic, and most certainly your morality (for that matter so does alcohol abuse). Couple that with the potential for a tax, and you can see why this may appeal to some politicians.
In these hard economic times, cash-hungry states will look greedily on this potential revenue stream. But the money is a red herring (look it up). Legalization will lead to greater human suffering and lost production. It will diminish productiveness, lead to family problems, and increase the number of "hard drug" users who will only cost the government money and make life more miserable and dangerous for the rest of us.
Ask yourself these questions:
Would you want your kids to smoke pot?
If you were running your own small business, would you want a pot smoker (or a drunk) working for you?
Be honest about it.
I, for one, do not wish to work with a stoner (or a drunk for that matter), nor would I hire one.

People think if you smoke weed you are a stoner that sits on their couch and eats cheetos all day, or you go crazy and jump off buildings.
The only problem with marijuana is that its illegal. This creates a market for criminals.
You don't see people shooting each other over beer anymore do you?

I'm a conservative republican, but let us stop being hypocrites, how can you not legalized marijuana. If you would compare alcohol and marijuana destructiveness, marijuana will not even come close to all the dangers that alchohol imposes, and to have a chance to put the cartels out of business, and make money that will benefit the states. Really guys, it's a no brainer.

It's time to stop arresting NON-CRIMINALS for NON-CRIMES with NO VICTIMS!
If you want to make marijuana legal you need to do what works! Three of the most successful marijuana policy reformers have written a book called: Marijuana Is Safer So Why Are We Driving People To Drink. Just Google the title and you can either buy the book or download a free PDF copy. This book clearly explains why certain arguments for legalizing marijuana are well received and why so many logical arguments fall on deaf ears. Legalization is coming but it will come a lot sooner if those who already understand why marijuana should be legal learn the proven most effective ways to present the facts supporting legalizing. We are not adding another harmful intoxicant, we are giving people the legal opportunity to make the SAFER CHOICE!
The Constitutional right to freedom of religion, free speech, a free press, to keep and bear arms, to be secure in your person, house, papers and effects against unreasonable search and seizure, to life, liberty and property, to be protected from having your property taken by the government without due process of law and without just compensation, to confront the witnesses against you, to be protected from excessive bail, excessive fines, cruel and unusual punishment, to vote and others have been unjustly denied to millions of Americans in the name of the drug war.
All major authorities agree that the vast majority of so called “drug-related” violent crime is caused by the prohibition of drugs, rather than the drugs themselves. This was the same during alcohol prohibition. Alcohol prohibition created violent criminal organizations just like every other drug prohibition has. These violent crimes should be labeled prohibition related, not drug related. Ending alcohol prohibition is exactly why you don’t see shootouts over that drug trade any more.
NO ONE, IN THE ENTIRE WORLD, OF ANY AGE, IN ALL OF RECORDED HISTORY, HAS EVER DIED FROM THE INGREDIENTS IN MARIJUANA. MANY HAVE DIED FROM ITS PROHIBITION. In the US we arrest someone on marijuana charges every 38 seconds.
Marijuana DOES NOT cause dangerous, aggressive or reckless driving. It is well documented that marijuana consumers are aware they are mildly impaired and they tend to slow down and be more cautious. Google: marijuana driving study
Illegal drugs are far easier for kids to get than rationally regulated drugs like alcohol and tobacco, illegal dealers don't ask for ID.
AT SOME POINT WE HAVE TO REALIZE THAT A CERTAIN PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS GOING TO USE DRUGS AND IMPLEMENT POLICY THAT MINIMIZES THE HARMS WITHOUT DEVASTATING SOCIETY.
If you can show me ANYTHING that the drug war has accomplished when it comes to reducing drug related death, disease, crime and drug use that has significantly improved any drug related area over a long period of time I’d appreciate you telling me what it is.
Because of the inflated prices of illegal drugs CAUSED by prohibition the profits between the point of production and the point of sale can be as much as 17,000%. DRUG PROHIBITION IS A SELF PERPETUATING POLICY THAT DRAWS PEOPLE INTO THE ILLEGAL DRUG TRADE LIKE A MAGNET BECAUSE OF THE ENORMOUS PROFITS DIRECTLY CAUSED BY PROHIBITION. Alcohol prohibition created the same unnecessary, wasteful and harmful problems as every other drug prohibition. THE YEAR ALCOHOL PROHIBITION ENDED VIOLENT CRIME FELL BY 65%.

Caontact your federal, state and local reps at least once per month and tell them the harms of prohibition and the benefits of rationally regulating adult marijuana consumption like we do alcohol and tobacco. BR Sumbich,
I gotta ask: Does that screen name mean you are "Someone's B*tch"?
Seriously though, I'm a republican - and I believe it's time for the United States to consider the drug models in Portugal (total drug legalization) and the Netherlands (small amounts of cannabis legalized). The war on drugs is a total failure and also a brilliant scam at the same time.
Why do I say that?
Because in spite of the BILLIONS of our taxpayer dollars being spent for the war on drugs - drugs are readily available for anybody that wants to find them. Everytime the police make (what they think) is a large bust - it doesn't interrupt the supply one iota. Look at how many people the police are busting for cannabis lately. For every person you throw in jail for growing cannabis - there are likely 1,000 more that you don't catch.
As others have pointed out - cannabis is impossible to overdose on. Can you overdose on Alcohol? You bet! Pain Meds? You bet! Yet anyone in Florida can (in a matter of minutes) drive down to the liquor store and purchase enough alcohol to drink themselves to death & swing by the "pain management" clinic and pick up enough pills to overdose on.
I almost forgot - the alcohol industries and pharmaceutical industries make contributions to "Drug Awareness" programs - so it's OK.
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=1a7_1240582766
How's your hypocrisy meter doing?
Why is the war on drugs a scam? Because in spite of the fact that all of the money that we TAXPAYERS are spending on this "War", the end result is continued availability of drugs and an escalating prison population. Did you know that the United States has more people in prison than any other country?
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/23/world/americas/23iht-23prison.12253738.html
How does that synch up with the ideals that were the prevalent when this great nation was started? You know - life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Being free from UNREASONABLE search & seizures?
Ever hear of the "Knock & Talk" gestapo tactic?
http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2010-10-02/news/os-knock-and-talk-procedures-20100922_1_officers-show-doorstep-tactic
What this boils down to is that police departments receive budgets from local, state, & federal governments - but at the same time attempt to manipulate public opinion about the war on drugs (because they are getting boatloads of CASH to fight this "war"). The police departments want us to think that we are "winning" - they just need more cash. Don't even get me started on the "for profit" prisons in Florida! What an incentive to lock more people up when there is so much money changing hands (there wouldn't be any kickbacks would there? Surely not in Florida!).
One more item of note - Why is it that Republicans typically want less government intrusion in their lives - yet are OK with feeding the 800 pound gorilla known as the war on drugs?
By the way - I'm not a "Stoner" or a "Doper", just a person who's fed up with Government hypocrisy and wasteful spending of MY MONEY.

Florida Voter Says Vote Out th 10/09/2010 8:26:00 PM
Full legalization in Florida could literally bring Florida to the forefront of a GRAND tourism industry.
Other countries are building marijuana tourism industries to get ready for the inevitable - full legalization. It will be similar to the wine industry for tourism. In addition they have extensions for medical, and grow education and tourism. Plus they are cultivating hemp which is the REAL REASON marijuana is illegal.
The American people have been lied to for decades. Competing industries did not want hemp harvested because it grows FAST and can be made into oil much easier and faster and cheaper than corn. It can be made into plastic and building material. The uses are endless. It is non-toxic. And it CLEANS the soil and does NOT require dangerous fertilizers and pesticides.
ALL of these industries want to keep marijuana illegal.
That is just about hemp.
Marijuana is MORE effective in treating some diseases and disorders with ZERO toxicity.
Again marijuana is NOT TOXIC. You could smoke 1,000 joints in a row and NOT die. It is safer than ALL over the counter medicine.
It is safer than MANY of the foods you eat.
The criminal justice system is RAPING tax dollars over the prohibition of marijuana. It is a crime AGAINST the people. Citizens have been BRAINWASHED. READ THE FACTS.
Prison unions, police unions, lawyers, pharmaceutical companies, alcohol industry all want to keep marijuana illegal so they can keep getting your money!
SOME in the law enforcement community are brave enough to speak out and tell the truth.

Florida Senior 10/09/2010 8:13:00 PM
Florida is going to lose BILLIONS - possibly trillions, in TOURISM over this! The stupid politicians that run this state can't be so dumb! Any politician who is NOT in favor of legalization is crooked. They are WELL aware of the facts and choose to put their head down and avoid the subject instead of educating the benefits to society and begin to repair the damage that has been done by the prohibition of one of the safest most effective plants God gave us. This is all about GREED. To fill the coffers of lawyers, judges, rehabs, prisons, and police depts. Police are against legalization because they'd MUCH rather be making a marijuana arrest than they would a REAL crime. Why? It is safe. The users are NOT violent.
This article did not even touch on the medical benefits of marijuana. Again, the politicians are DUMB. Marijuana STOPS seizures from MS, it KILLS cancer cells without destroying surrounding tissue, it is a significant pain reliever, it is a significant anti anxiety medication, effectively treats glaucoma, and many more illnesses and disorders. Marijuana has been show to be effective in hundreds of studies and hundreds of thousands of patients. Florida is known for its aging population and yet it is the strictest state!
WHY? - Would a patient choose addicting, toxic, pain pills and medications with Harsh long lasting detrimental side effects when they could choose marijuana which is NON-TOXIC?
The DEA's own judge "Marijuana is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man."
That is ONLY the medical side.
Now regarding the recreational side.... comparing marijuana to alcohol is like comparing a heart attack to a hang nail. The user is happy, sleepy, and hungry. Not to mention calm and NEVER violent. And AMAZINGLY studies show it does not cause lung cancer.
Marijuana is NOT a gateway drug. That is like saying "mothers milk" is a gateway drink. If marijuana was a gateway drug, we would have millions of active hard core drug abusers in the US.
The ONLY reason (and politicians know this) that marijuana is illegal and the penalties are so ridiculous is we now have prisons for PROFIT. What kind of SICK society are we? We PAY stockholders higher returns on the more prisoners we lock up!!! Arresting someone for a PLANT is so insane when you actually stop and THINK. This is a VICTIMLESS crime. Marijuana has NEVER caused a death in 10,000 years! Peanuts, potatoes, and aspirin are more dangerous!!!
What about FREEDOM and LIBERTY? Why should the Government get to choose what I put into my body? If I choose to treat myself with a MORE effective NON-TOXIC plant it should be my business as an adult.
The Federal Govt. lists marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug. That means it has NO Medicinal side effects. Yet the Federal Govt. has approved Federal patients (who it made very difficult for them to get approved - it took YEARS). AND the icing on the cake? The Federal Government holds patent number 6630507! The patent is held by the Dept. of Health and Human Services.
Your Government has KNOWN FOR YEARS (decades) that marijuana is SAFER and MORE EFFECTIVE!
This could be a HUGE TRILLION dollar industry for Florida! Medical, Recreational, Tourism!
WAKE UP FLORIDA POLITICIANS!

When are you stoners going to learn. Pot is illegal by FEDERAL LAW. It is not a state matter to make it legal. No matter what the state passes, the federal law trumps state law. The DEA, FBI, etc, is still quite active in California. Because the state does not enforce law, does not make you free of prosecution. Feds are raiding the cannabis cafe's daily.

Broward County is number one in the nation in the sale of "pain meds" creating a huge black market, addicting people everyday to opiates and flooding EMS and healthcare systems with patients who overdose or seek drugs.... pill mills are still all legal and subject to state tax
Florida had almost 3000 DUI related deaths in 2008... alcohol is still legal and subject to state tax
Cigarettes kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined. Florida averages over 28,000 deaths a year due to cigarettes. Still legal and taxable! Annual health care costs in Florida directly caused by smoking $6.32 billion
So... if everyone is worried about how "dangerous" it is or how it will "waste" tax payers money if we stop enforcing drug laws, do some research and get educated. This state is broke!!! Regardless of your voting preference, it's time we start looking at all of our options.

In 1987 I applied for a job as a dragline operator for Capiletti Bro's inc. I had work for tem for several years before and had left the company on good terms and an excellant work record. I was in my mid twenties at the time and I smoked pot. They just started this drug testing policy when they asked me to come back to work for them. I tested positive for marijuana and was denied the job. When they called me to let me know the personal manager ripped into me and called me an addict! He happend to have two DUI's on his record both in a company vehicle. I moved on and learned my lesson but to think how hard a worker I was and the many peole I would know for years who failed drug tests made me realize how behind reallity our government was. I no fire up the bud and have no desire to even if it is legalized. But this is a different world now and there is a potential for tax money and growth in an industry that has made criminals trillions while police officers and teachers are being laid off. Time to smell the weed AMERICA and make change so our gorvenment, not law breakers, have more spare change to spend instead of raising our taxes while dealer pay none!!

Nixon's War on Drugs
Nixon won the election on a campaign-platform for restoring law and order in the country. Since most criminal violations are handled by the states, he found that drug laws could allow him to be most effective. He launched Operation Intercept. Two thousand customs agents were deployed along the Mexican border in a military-style search and seizure mission to stop the flow of marijuana. Virtually no marijuana was found among the 5 million people who were searched and after three weeks the operation was abandoned. Nixon then decided to concentrate on police training to fight the war against marijuana. Almost immediately, marijuan-related arrests and convictions increased dramatically.

Did anybody else pick up on the sarcasm in Jillian's comments? CLASSIC! ...Obviously all of the money taxpayers are spending to maintain the "War On Drugs" is really NOT making much of a difference, since basically ever single person I know either has or still does smoke pot. And we are talking about very successful, upstanding, well-educated members of society; not a bunch of loser dropouts or scumbags. These are not the sort of people we want to remove from society and lock up -- they're the GOOD GUYS! If it was legal, there would be no shady drug dealers involved in it, no violence, no CRIME. And because it's illegal and not regulated, it's far easier for young kids to get a hold of a bag of weed than it is for them to get some beers or a pack of smokes. Keeping it illegal is actually making it MORE available to underage buyers. I also have a personal interest in having it legalized because my mother, who suffers from a rare and incurable eye disease, was growing a single pot plant in her home for its medicinal value, and when a nosy (and in my opinion, perverted) neighbor of hers spotted it whilst peeping at her, he called the police and she was arrested and treated like a criminal. We are talking about a wonderful, kind, intelligent, hardworking grandmother who had never had any sort of run-in with the law in her entire life. It's the most obtuse and idiotic prohibition I've ever heard of. Legalize it, tax it, and regulate it. I want my mother to be able to get the relief she needs, and my young daughter NOT to be able to purchase it from a drug dealer who will then try to convince her to try other, more dangerous things.

Here are some facts concerning the situation in Holland. --Please save a copy and use it as a reference when debating prohibitionists who claim the exact opposite concerning reality as presented here below:
”Cannabis coffee shops" are not only restricted to the Capital of Holland, Amsterdam. They can be found in more than 50 cities and towns across the country. At present, only the retail sale of five grams is tolerated, so production remains criminalized. The mayors of a majority of the cities with coffeeshops have long urged the national government to also decriminalize the supply side.
A poll taken earlier this year indicated that some 50% of the Dutch population thinks cannabis should be fully legalized while only 25% wanted a complete ban. Even though 62% of the voters said they had never taken cannabis. An earlier poll also indicated 80% opposing coffee shop closures.
http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2010/02/public_split_on_cannabis_legal.php
It is true that the number of coffee shops has fallen from its peak of around 2,500 throughout the country to around 700 now. The problems, if any, concern mostly “drug tourists” and are largely confined to cities and small towns near the borders with Germany and Belgium. These problems, mostly involve traffic jams, and are the result of cannabis prohibition in neighboring countries. “Public nuisance problems” with the coffee shops are minimal when compared with bars, as is demonstrated by the rarity of calls for the police for problems at coffee shops.
While it is true that lifetime and “past-month” use rates did increase back in the seventies and eighties, the critics shamefully fail to report that there were comparable and larger increases in cannabis use in most, if not all, neighboring countries which continued complete prohibition.
According to the World Health Organization only 19.8 percent of the Dutch have used marijuana, less than half the U.S. figure.
In Holland 9.7% of young adults (aged 15–24) consume soft drugs once a month, comparable to the level in Italy (10.9%) and Germany (9.9%) and less than in the UK (15.8%) and Spain (16.4%). Few transcend to becoming problem drug users (0.44%), well below the average (0.52%) of the compared countries.
The WHO survey of 17 countries finds that the United States has the highest usage rates for nearly all illegal substances.
In the U.S. 42.4 percent admitted having used marijuana. The only other nation that came close was New Zealand, another bastion of get-tough policies, at 41.9 percent. No one else was even close. The results for cocaine use were similar, with the U.S. again leading the world by a large margin.
Even more striking is what the researchers found when they asked young adults when they had started using marijuana. Again, the U.S. led the world, with 20.2 percent trying marijuana by age 15. No other country was even close, and in Holland, just 7 percent used marijuana by 15 -- roughly one-third of the U.S. figure.
thttp://www.alternet.org/drugs/90295/
In 1998, the US Drug Czar General Barry McCaffrey claimed that the U.S. had less than half the murder rate of the Netherlands. “That’s drugs,” he explained. The Dutch Central Bureau for Statistics immediately issued a special press release explaining that the actual Dutch murder rate is 1.8 per 100,000 people, or less than one-quarter the U.S. murder rate.
Here’s a very recent article by a psychiatrist from Amsterdam, exposing "Drug Czar misinformation"
http://tinyurl.com/247a8mp
Now let's look at a comparative analysis of the levels of cannabis use in two cities: Amsterdam and San Francisco, which was published in the American Journal of Public Health May 2004,
The San Francisco prevalence survey showed that 39.2% of the population had used cannabis. This is 3 times the prevalence found in the Amsterdam sample
Source: Craig Reinarman, Peter D.A. Cohen and Hendrien L. Kaal, "The Limited Relevance of Drug Policy"
http://www.mapinc.org/lib/limited.pdf
Moreover, 51% of people who had smoked cannabis in San Francisco reported that they were offered heroin, cocaine or amphetamine the last time they purchased cannabis. In contrast, only 15% of Amsterdam residents who had ingested marijuana reported the same conditions. Prohibition is the ‘Gateway Policy’ that forces cannabis seekers to buy from criminals who gladly expose them to harder drugs.
The indicators of death, disease and corruption are even much better in the Netherlands than in Sweden for instance, a country praised by UNODC for its “successful” drug policy."
Here's Antonio Maria Costa doing his level best to avoid discussing the success of Dutch drug policy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lExNjEhdSkY&feature=related
The Netherlands also provides heroin on prescription under tight regulation to about 1500 long-term heroin addicts for whom methadone maintenance treatment has failed.
http://www.rnw.nl/english/article/free-heroin-brings-everyone-a-bit-peace
The Dutch justice ministry announced, last year, the closure of eight prisons and cut 1,200 jobs in the prison system. A decline in crime has left many cells empty. There's simply not enough criminals

Never mind all of the state Supreme Court Justices and Federal District Court Judges who have ruled that Alcoholics Anonymous is a religion, or engages in religious activities. We'll just ignore them too `: the world is to change people's minds. As more and more people openly discuss the fact that "God" and "Allah" are completely imaginary, the world becomes a better place. The only reason marijuana is a gateway to harder substances is because you have to go to a DRUG DEALER to buy it. I don't go to the liquor store and come back with meth. Drug dealers don't ID, parents! If you're concerned about children having access to marijuana, legalize it. A study conducted by the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse shows that children report having an easier time getting weed than booze. If you're concerned about the gateway effect, legalize it, and get it off the black market.
If you're worried your child will get evicted from his college dorm because he smoked a joint instead of binge drinking himself halfway to death with his peers, legalize it. If you're concerned that your daughter will be unsafe away at college around alcohol-fueled young men, legalize it.
Let's give adults the legal option to make the rational choice to recreate with a substance that is far less harmful than alcohol and stop driving people to drink.

Laziness and lack of motivation are not a law enforcement issue. Marijuana is far safer than alcohol and should be treated that way. No one in the history of mankind has overdosed and died from marijuana, but unfortunately many, many people die every year from alcohol use. Alcohol is far more frequently associated with acts of violence, including sexual assaults and domestic abuse. Marijuana is not. You might laugh and snort and crack jokes about doritos, but when is the last time you heard about someone smoking a joint and beating the ever-loving sh*t out of his wife and kids? It's no joke. By punishing adults who make the rational choice to use a safer substance than alcohol, we are driving people to use alcohol for their recreation.
BTW, I am a 20-something young professional balancing not one, but TWO great careers, graduated with honors, and am pursuing a doctorate...all while using marijuana in my life. The only reason you don't hear about more people like me is because there is so much fear associated with admitting to doing something illegal. BUT marijuana is the 2nd most popular recreational drug after alcohol, so marijuana users ARE the mainstream. It's time to stand up for yourselves.

Bartholomew Cubbins- I agee, I apologize if I've affended anyone.
People can think what ever they wanna think, just don't crame down peoples throats I guess.

It's fine to believe what you want to believe, in this case whether marijuana should be legal or not legal, but no matter what side of the issue you fall on, it does not make you a better person than those with a different opinion. I wouldn't want anyone like that making decisions about how I live my life. Some of the comments here are really ugly and a turn-off. If you want to explain how you feel about the subject, do so with class and grace so you don't turn people off before you even state your case. You'll go further in life that way. It's all about respect for your fellow human beings and fellow American citizens, whether you agree with them on this issue or not.

Watersisland, haha very funny. Sounds like your just like Ken with a "smart ass" attitude. It also sounds like your a Pot Head hippie too. You people are so bright, wonder if you have any brain cells left after all these years. I know lots of people like you with their smart ass responses, but in the end, you resolve nothing. It seems like your the one thats ranting, raving, and bashing. I don't represent any political party, because in the end, their all a bunch of crooks. I am an American that believes in the "Real American Way", not all this socialist shit that OBAMA is ramming down everyones throat. Its people like you and and the shit heads like Jon Stewart and Bill Mahr that are poisening the minds of young people to think like Socailists. How dare you call me an ass, take a look at yourself you blood sucking Democrat! Come election day, all your socialist democrats are going down, because America can't stand it anymore.

Well,First off....KEN...COME ON DOWN...AND TAKE A BOW. You're our runner up AND WINNER for the 'foot in mouth' disease award. Ken, you really should put your OWN agenda AND ego aside when you wish to represent ANY Party or group of people. OK, YEAH, many Repblicans are idiots. And now, NOW, you've told everyone how idiotic the people are that take great OFFENSE toward Repbulicans...gee, what group could that be Ken? It actually would have been better for those of us that ARE NOT Republicans, even those of us that DON'T attempt to publicly condemn someone because we THINK they might be a Republican, for you to have also publicly denounced that OTHER major party that MAY be in opposition to the Republicans, Uhm, whatever that party may be.
OK, lets cut the shit Ken...I would HATE for ANYONE to think that you are indicitive of someone that represents the same party of which "I" often support. KEN, please educate yourself. READ THE ARTICLE. There ARE TWO people that DO get Marijuana from the Federal Government---LEGALLY. So therefore, that little tidbit you offered about there being NO such thing as legalized marijuana at the federal level,"medical or otherwise",is completely negated by what's IN THE STORY. It doesn't even have to be RESEARCHED....IT's in paragraph four lines two, three, and four in the same story that you're suposidly COMMENTING ON KEN. Oh, I'm sure you've not got enough humility to recognize when you're wrong, particularly when you're such an ASS about it. AND...I'll bet you'll even formulate some sort of "rationale" as to WHY...you're still RIGHT!
You're emphatic statement, as if it were a FACT, that Marijuana SHOULD be a "STATES RIGHT", is merely---YOUR OPINION. The REAL shame about your opinion...is that "I" believe it should ALSO be a states right. That's MY opoinion. But I STILL think you're an ASS. You seem to have a WONDERFUL skill at 'winning the hearts and minds' of people that not only DISagree with you, but also those that AGREE with you----NOT!
In the future, please clearly identify yourself as not aligned with ANY major OR minor party, because what you're REALLY representing is your own EGO. This was a discussion about the legalization of Marijuana, which, although I don't partake of it anymore, I FULLY support the legalization of it, and have for DECADES. Since back in the early 70's when "I" first smoked it---OK, it WAS 1970. Back then we didn't start smoking pot when we were in elementary school. Most people I knew didnt even try it untill they were 16 or 17---self included.
There are very good arguments about why it should be legalized. But your egotistical RANT seemes to bolster nothing but your ignorance and arrogance. Ken, with friends like you..NO-ONE needs real enemies....and YOU are your OWN worst enemy. Please learn how to ACTUALLY present a stance that WILL win the hearts and minds of the opposition, AND gain you respect from BOTH sides INCLUDING...YOURSELF. Right now, you really couldn't convince me that you actually have any respect for YOURSELF. The SAD part of all that is ....that you probably don't even SEE that and really wouldn't recognize "self respect" if it BIT YOU ON THE ASS. Your entire deranged rant seems to be aimed at impressing yourself in some deluded fashion. Open your mind Ken. Take a good hard look at how YOU would be won over to an oposing position. It's REALLY a simple thing to do! What other possible reason could you have had for wanting to post YOUR opinion. Would't it be to gently present your case in such a manner that the opposition might actually take a look at it? Do you REALLY think you've done that? It's called DYSFUNCTIONAL KEN. But...you have to RECOGNIZE IT before you can DO anything about it. When you finally ARE able to open your eyes to it....don't be too hard on yourself.....Many individuals, many of which are posting here....are ALSO not doing themselves any great favors....for themselves....or for their position. And yet this same rhetoric is being passed of as political differences. It's NOT just political differences....It's politial SUICIDE. Politics is suppose to mean "schmoozing"....not BASHING! BASHING never accomplished ANYTHING but further alienation. And THAT's why we have such disfunction between the parties. Thats whey we have opposing sides doing NOTHING ----FOR their position. BASHING doesn't accomplish anything. It's a shame that many party officials Don't recognize that. And PERSONALLY, I think it is an attitude of destruction that is more aligned with ONE of the TWO major parties. But if our political system of opposing viewpoints disintigrates any REAL unity among the people of the United States.....it doesn't matter WHO was wrong. We're ALL loosers. And we'll ALL suffer the consequences...which will be "dimished capacity" of the populace to accomplish ANYTHING. We know what occurs when that happens Ken....Our nation collapses. History has proven THAT. It's the 'history of man'. We get no free passes because we "USE TO BE" something special. We'll fall just like the GREATEST civilizations have fallen. We can't afford to wait untill our political "leaders" (I use THAT term...VERY loosly, NO....more like " satyrically" or "sarcastically") LEAD the way. Those who claim to be our parties "leaders" are NOT LEADERS at all. It's time for people like YOU..and ME- KEN....to realize that what is being passed of as political posturing...is really just SUICIDE. It's time for people like you and me...to take back the power we GAVE to these so called "Leaders', and for US to start SETTING the examples instead of following their LEAD. We DO know that we're not going to win over ANYONE's minds and hearts, and thus advance our positions and our ideas....if all we do is BASH.----Right Ken?
Lets DO IT!
@NIKKI---you and KEN are (WERE) two birds of a feather. Ken's gonna smarten up now....YOU...I dunno, I'l bet you also do a lot for your position and your party.....Uhm...what IS your position. All I can seem to see is that you're maintaining that you're an ASS.

Ken- It sounds like your either a really bitter Democrat or homosexual. Either way, your all one in the same.
Relocate to Cuba huhh, perhaps you should talk to the people that have really walked the walk and know what the "real" politics are in that country before you presume to know anything.I can't stand people like you that think they know it all and have never experienced a single day of real poverty or been restricted from basic human rights, yet you feel compelled to post comments as if you know anything. Certanly the media has not caputured what its really like in that country because that "really strong federal goverment" will not let anyone see what really goes on over; and god forbid someone speaks to the outside media and they'll be placed infront of a post before the sun goes down to get their head blown off. Perhaps you should stop watching clips from Socialist bastards like Micheal Moore who are really ridicoulous and know nothing.
As far as the Marijuana, I don't care either way since I don't smoke it. The only ones that will lose buisness are the drug dealers, which will lower crime at some rate, and that is a plus for us good citizens.
And News Time Miami, stop dealting my post, I believe freedom of speech is allowed!

Stewie: Now everybody gather 'round and listen if you would
When I tell you every person needs a way of feeling good
Every kitty needs a ball of string and every dog a stick
Stewie & Brian: But all you need is a bag of weed to really get a kick
All: One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight
A Bag of Weed, A Bag of Weed
Oh, Everything is better with A Bag of Weed
It's the only hope that you'll ever need
Because Everything is better with A Bag of Weed
Stewie: There you go, you're all getting it now
Ensemble: When Texas people wanna feel good,
Stewie: They go assault a queer.
Ensemble: When stupid people need a thrill,
Stewie: They rent The Rocketeer.
Ensemble: When Michael Jackson needs a rush,
Stewie: He humps a guy like me.
Ensemble: Right!
All: But all we need is a bag of weed,
To keep us worry free.
One, Two, Three, HO!
A Bag of Weed, A Bag of Weed
Oh, everything is better with A Bag of Weed
Oh, you don't need meth and you don't need speed
Because Everything is better with A Bag of Weed
Stewie: Have a go, Brian!
Brian: As Mr. H.L. Mencken said, "The common man's a fool."
Stewie: And just like Helen Keller said, "Poof do kee dee poh pool."
Brian: But try and use your heads and don't buy into all the fear.
All: HEY!
'Cuz all we need is a bag of weed
To make us wanna cheer!
And One, Two!
A Bag of Weed, A Bag of Weed
Oh, everything is better with A Bag of Weed
You can try and fight but we're all agreed
Because everything is better with A Bag of Weed
(dance break)
One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight,
And One, Two, Three, Four, And A Five, And A Six, And A Seven! HO!!
A Bag of Weed, A Bag of Weed
Oh, everything is better with A Bag of Weed
You're a happy guy when you plant the seed,
Because everything is better with A Bag...
Of...
Weed!
Oh ev'rything is better with a bag of weed!!

Replying to William,
Just so you know ANY marijuana use, medical or otherwise, is illegal at the federal level. So before you start off as if you are informed on the subject it would be best to check your facts. Secondly marijuana should be a states issue to begin with. Something tells me you're a republican, yet you're so disillusioned as to where your party values come from that you can't see that marijuana being made illegal at the federal level is a violation of states rights, a true republican value.
Clearly you hate American freedom, maybe you should be the one looking to relocate to a country with a stronger federal government. Might I suggest Cuba?
-
William 10/06/2010 9:49:00 PM
Marijuana is probited by federal laws and federal laws are to be OBEYED everywhere in the U. S. A., except for people who show proof of use in medical care. Cities, counties & states CANNOT pass laws allowing something that's against federal laws!!
People who don want to obey the federal laws of this nation, which are the highest ones should be punished or get out of the U. S., damn it!!!

I BELIEVE IS WAY OVERDUE THE LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA, I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS REGULATE IT THE SAME AS ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO.IT'S TIME WE REAP THE BENEFITS FROM THE MONEY THI WILL PRODUCE FOR OUR STATE.
