The spectacle is bound to confuse passersby: men in trucker caps and ladies in horn-rimmed glasses hunched over light boxes, scribbling on note cards while a rowdy bunch behind them waits its turn. The event in question is Drinking and Drawing at the News Lounge. It’s a sort of animated jam session where the artistically inclined come together over pints and highballs to create a short animated film. Here’s how it works: You’ll receive eight blank note cards plus the last card from the animator who drew before you. Then you’ll have ten minutes (that’s only 75 seconds a card, hurry!) to sketch a continued animation. At the end of the night, everyone’s note cards will be combined into a two-minute film, a sort of 2-D flipbook of everyone’s drunken fantasies. Drinking and Drawing is a nationwide event, started by cartoon studio Frederator in New York. Spencer Morin, the animation department head at Miami World Cinema Center (and son of Miami Herald cartoonist Jim Morin), began sponsoring the bimonthly, free event in Miami last fall. If you can doodle, you have the necessary skills to make your own Itchy & Scratchy.
