Redemption Songs

At the Jamnesty, local acts rock in the name of freedom.

Perhaps you’ve noticed the enormous orange box that’s been trundling across the city. Armed with an eye-catching jail cell, Amnesty International has been on its Counter Terror with Justice: Guantánamo Bay Cell Replica Tour. Beginning Thursday, organizers will be visiting Miami landmarks with a life-size replica of a maximum-security prison cell at the U.S.-controlled detention facility, complete with steel toilet, fluorescent lights, frosted windows, sliding metal door, and a webcam that records your reaction in real time. This ain’t a Harold and Kumar flick, where you can easily escape the fate of eating a “cockmeat sandwich.” The exterior of the cell is covered with LCD screens offering horrific insight into America’s shameful secret detentions.

The people behind the worldwide organization know it takes a spoonful of sugar to make such bitter medicine go down, so the tour culminates with the Jamnesty, an afternoon of arts, activism, and music featuring Cornerstone, Lox the Rippa, Brimstone, the Heartbreakerz break-dance crew, and other acts from 1 to 8 p.m. It kicks off near the Torch of Friendship at Bayfront Park.
Sat., May 10, 1-8 p.m., 2008
