Miami Restaurant Openings & Closings June, 2012
The big news in July regrettably revolved around closings: Sra. Martinez said adios in the Design District, David's Cafe II shut down its Lincoln Road branch, and Jamie DeRosa and Geoffrey Zakarian are now both gone from Tudor House, which sort of ends that restaurant's run. Plus the pop-up Eating House popped away on schedule. That's four notable losses, although there's still Michy's, David's Cafe I and an imminent and more permanent return of Rapicavoli on tap.
As far as openings, former Nobu chef Ricky Sauri runs the new kitchen at Bloom, an Asian-Latin-American street food outpost in Wynwood. And the Tampa import Whisky Joe's opened where Rickenbacker Fish Company used to be (more BBQ and booze -- what a snooze). All other debuts were from pre-existing eateries opening new branches -- Shake Shack, 8 oz. Burger Bar, Taverna Opa, etc.
But heck, it's mid-summer; things move slow. Look for a big roll-out come fall, as evidenced by our ever-growing list of restaurants "on deck."
