In a shining example of government idiocy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is actually encouraging people to apply for food stamps.
The government agency has an active program to lure more Americans into applying for food stamps, specifically targeting senior citizens. This program costs the USDA $2.5 to $3 million per year.
But wait -- the way the money is spent makes this story even better.
These millions of dollars are used for a promotional campaign that includes radio commercials and pamphlets. One such promotional pamphlet reads:
"Throw a Great Party. Host social events where people mix and mingle... Make it fun by having activities, games, food, and entertainment, and provide information about SNAP. Putting SNAP information in a game format like BINGO, crossword puzzles, or even a 'true/false' quiz is fun and helps get your message across in a memorable way."
In other words, use your food stamp benefits to host senior soirees. Fantastic.
Radio spots have aired in California, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, and New York.
According to Fox News, the USDA claims, "Every $5 in new SNAP benefits generates $9.20 in an additional community spending."

This reminds me of another economic theory that proposes the more we spend, the more we make. My bank statements are enough to disprove that hypothesis.
Since Barack Obama took office, the food stamp budget has more than doubled. I won't rag on the administration for increasing funds for the SNAP program, because it's pretty obvious a lot more people are suffering financially since he took office. It's the least he could do.
