With a groovy Earth Day vibe still in the air, as well as the pungent smell of oil upon the Gulf, now might be a good time to tell you about the TREEtini. It's a mojito-like martini made with Veev Açai Spirit (pronounced ah-SIGH-ee), mint leaves, lime wedges and club soda, and is available at Brickell's bopping Barú Urbano restaurant/bar for $10.
But what makes this a real specialty cocktail is that it's part of a Have A Drink, Plant A Tree initiative that Barú partners Juan Carlos Pardo and Nicolas Hoyos are working in conjunction with Veev and Live It Green: For each TREEtini sold, these groups will plant a tree. And for every bottle of VeeV sold, one dollar is donated to the conservation of the Rainforest.
I tried a TREEtini, and it was tasty. If I had more time I would've had seven or eight more, and could have then had a whole bunch of trees planted in the Rainforest to complement the one I had planted in my name in Israel. Speaking of which -- I hereby offer my Israeli tree to VeeV for one bottle of its Açai Spirit. As for the less fortunate and treeless among you, I suggest heading to Barú Urbano not just for a TREEtini Al Gore-type moment, but because it exudes a hip, graffiti-splattered, local-friendly vibe.
