38. Flan Cheesecake at Sunset Bakery
It's such an obvious pairing that one has to wonder why nobody else thought of it: A cheesecake capped with a tall wet layer of flan de huevo. Both desserts, after all, are prepared with eggs and flavored with vanilla. Cheesecake goes very well with caramel; cheese goes very well with eggs. As with a proper cheese omelet, the ratio of Sunset Bakery's flan cheesecake is weighted heavily towards the eggy flan. Or perhaps more accurately, the cheesecake and crust are absorbed by and become one with the flan in, some might say, rather Zen-like fashion.
The traditional caramelized syrup seeps into the dessert as well, leaving the cake crowned with a soft but semi-solid caramel cap. Still, it's so overloaded with moist components that a wedge can be messy to eat. Small price to pay for the luscious pleasures that each bite brings. And small price for each bite: The sloppy, hefty wedge in the photo is $1.50.
Sunset Bakery boasts all other manner of pastries (with Cuban and French influences), as well as croquetas, medianoche, sandwich Cubano (sandwiches are $4.75), and other snacks. Early risers will appreciate the 6 am opening time, seven days a week.
