Queer culture isn't new, but its visibility is growing. It rejects gender and sexual-preference norms and avoids labels such as "gay," "lesbian," "bisexual," and "straight." Being queer is understanding that gender is more complicated than "male" or "female." It challenges the system of classifying people into two distinct sexes as woefully outdated.
