During last Saturday's Art Walk, thousands of people sprayed themselves with bug repellent and came out to support Wynwood's restaurants, bars, galleries, and businesses.
Even an evening thunderstorm couldn't dampen the spirits of the crowd, who celebrated the reopening of the Wynwood Yard and took advantage of the many Love for Locals discounts.
Though this past weekend could mark a turnaround point for Wynwood, many neighborhood establishments have seen a sharp decline in revenue for the month and still need the support of locals.
The Paul & Young Ron Show cohosts Paul Castronovo and "Young" Ron Brewer are doing their part by hosting a lunch and walk for listeners tomorrow, August 17.
Beginning at 11:30 a.m., the local radio icons will meet fans at Wynwood Kitchen & Bar for a three-course lunch, complete with a glass of beer or wine, with The Paul & Young Ron Show footing the bill for the first 50 listeners who preregister. All other fans can take advantage of the meal for $23.
After lunch, Castronovo and Brewer will invite fans to tour Wynwood Walls and hang at some local businesses, including Zak the Baker and Wynwood Brewing Company. The tour will be aired on Facebook Live, with a video filmed for the show's website.
Paul and Young Ron will be joined by some local celebrities, including comedians Carlos Mencia and Will Shriner, Zoo Miami's Ron Magill, and Naked Taco's Ralph Pagano. In addition, Kenny, co-owner of Wynwood-based Austin Burke, will be on hand.
Castronovo says he and his wife visit Wynwood for events and love the area for its art and vibrant scene. "I remember when you didn't want to set foot in Wynwood. I watched it become what it is today. I think Wynwood is way cool."
The radio personality says he and his cohost wanted to do something to shine a light on the neighborhood's plight that was different from what other media outlets are doing. "We're on the radio. We need to go drink beer with these people and help them pay their bills."
Castronovo says that although he doesn't want to make light of the outbreak, he points out that nothing is exempt from his show's humor. "We have a ton of Deet and fly swatters. In addition, my partner Ron is wearing a full beekeeper's uniform."
Being serious for a moment, he encourages fans of his show to join in support. "It needs to be done. Hopefully, if people see that we're there, it's gotta be safe."
