Spanning 23 states and Washington, D.C., the list included restaurants from around the country, with New York boasting more than 24 winners. Kyu was the only restaurant in Miami to make the cut, joining three other Florida locales, including Buccan in Palm Beach, La Nouvelle Maison in Boca Raton, and Bull & Bear Steakhouse in Orlando.

Though American and Italian proved to be the most popular cuisines, French, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern are represented. Kyu, which is helmed by former Zuma alums chef Michael Lewis and Haigh, specializes in wood-fired Asian grilling. Through an open kitchen, diners can watch Lewis and his team practice Yakinku, a Japanese barbecue grilling method. Since the restaurant opened nearly three years ago, most of its menu remains the same, featuring dishes made exclusively on its wood-fired grill, including an assortment of fish, meats, and vegetables.

The annual list was generated solely from diner reviews collected between November 1, 2017, and October 31, 2018. All restaurants with a minimum "overall" score and number of qualifying reviews were included for consideration. Qualifying restaurants were then sorted according to a score calculated from each restaurant's average rating in the "overall" category. Restaurants were then listed in alphabetical order.
“We have our hands full keeping up with Kyu right now, but everyone should keep an eye out next year to see what else we have up our sleeve,” Haigh says.
