Just in time for the new year, Kyu, the Wynwood restaurant known for its Asian and American barbecue techniques, earned a coveted spot on OpenTable's 100 Best Restaurants in America 2018 list, which rounds up the most beloved dining spots from more than 12 million verified reviews.

Spanning 23 states and Washington, D.C., the list included restaurants from around the country, with New York boasting more than 24 winners. Kyu was the only restaurant in Miami to make the cut, joining three other Florida locales, including Buccan in Palm Beach, La Nouvelle Maison in Boca Raton, and Bull & Bear Steakhouse in Orlando.

“We are really excited and kind of surprised to have been recognized with this win," general manager and co-founder Steven Haigh says. "It’s a great testament to the hard work and effort of the entire Kyu family, including back of house and front of house, over the past few years. It’s all about the team. They’re the ones who deliver a consistent experience, day in and day out, that keeps guests coming back.”

Though American and Italian proved to be the most popular cuisines, French, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern are represented. Kyu, which is helmed by former Zuma alums chef Michael Lewis and Haigh, specializes in wood-fired Asian grilling. Through an open kitchen, diners can watch Lewis and his team practice Yakinku, a Japanese barbecue grilling method. Since the restaurant opened nearly three years ago, most of its menu remains the same, featuring dishes made exclusively on its wood-fired grill, including an assortment of fish, meats, and vegetables.

"We love being in Wynwood, especially," Haigh says. "It’s such a fun area and offers a great sense of community. The feeling of family gets passed along to our guests by chef Lewis and his kitchen team.”

The annual list was generated solely from diner reviews collected between November 1, 2017, and October 31, 2018. All restaurants with a minimum "overall" score and number of qualifying reviews were included for consideration. Qualifying restaurants were then sorted according to a score calculated from each restaurant's average rating in the "overall" category. Restaurants were then listed in alphabetical order.

“We have our hands full keeping up with Kyu right now, but everyone should keep an eye out next year to see what else we have up our sleeve,” Haigh says.
