You've probably already tried the pan con bistec ($6.25) at Enriqueta's, the jam-packed Cuban lunch counter/cafeteria that caters to families, workers, and hipsters on the corner of NE 29th Street and Second Avenue.

It's a hearty sandwich, crammed with thin slivers of steak, tomato, onion, cheese, and potato sticks. Some say it's the best pan con bistec in Miami, which might be true. But you'd be missing out if you didn't try the Cuban sandwich stuffed with croquetas ($7.50).

Traditionally, the Cuban sandwich employs roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard on its eponymous white bread. (Tampa adds salami, but Tampa is obviously confused.) At Enriqueta's, it benefits from a more welcome addition: a few slightly smooshed, golden croquetas.

Croquetas are a cylinder-shaped snack food which begin with a béchamel that's breaded and deep-fried. On their own, they sound like an excessive yet miraculous treat. But know this: They taste even better sandwiched with pork and pickles between two slices of bread.
