Cinco de Mayo Events in Miami: Food Trucks, Markets, Fiestas

Cinco de Mayo is this Saturday, and that means it's time for margaritas and mariachis. True, the holiday has turned into a bigger party in the States than in Mexico, and it's really not a celebration of Mexico's Independence Day (which, by the way, is September 16). But who cares?...

Cinco de Mayo is this Saturday, and that means it's time for margaritas and mariachis. True, the holiday has turned into a bigger party in the States than in Mexico, and it's really not a celebration of Mexico's Independence Day (which, by the way, is September 16). But who cares? It's a reason to celebrate Mexico's music, culture, and food. And that's good enough for us.

Because Miami loves a good party, there are plenty of ways to celebrate Cinco de Drinko (as the Corona commercials say). From family-friendly parties at the local market to eating bravely at a local food truck, here are our favorite ways to celebrate.

Whole Foods Market in South Beach is having a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on Saturday, May 5. This family-friendly (and free) event will offer face painting and a live mariachi band onsite. Learn how to cook healthy recipes at the Mexican-themed Health Starts Here cooking class, beginning at 2 p.m. Whole Foods Market will also give away jute bags to the first 100 customers of the day.

Talavera is celebrating Cinco de Mayo all weekend with live music, specialty dishes by executive chef Oscar Del Rivero, and hand crafted cocktails. From May 4-6, drink French margaritas and enjoy the fiesta with dishes like mole Don Vincente ($20), and classico queso fundido ($11).

Salsa Fiesta is celebrating May 4 and 5 with a live DJ spinning music and drink specials from 6 - 10 p.m. on Friday and from 2 -10 p.m. on Saturday. Cinco De Mayo specials include $2.50 cervezas, including Dos Equis Amber and Lager and Heineken bottles and $3 margaritas and sangria.

Mercadito Midtown
is celebrating Cinco de Mayo with an all-day fiesta. From noon - 5 p.m., guests can enjoy the restaurant's ala carte menu. A special Cinco de Mayo Ponche Zaragoza - a mix of tequila reposado orange, grapefruit, guajillo, Grand Marnier and yucataca ($6/lunch $12/dinner) will be offered. After 5 p.m., the fiesta continues with a $40 sharing menu. Authentic Mexican mariachis, dancers and a DJ will be on hand to entertain while you drink your ponche!

Rosa Mexicano in Brickell is having a 12-hour Cinco de Mayo extravaganza from noon to midnight with mariachis, live music, DJ's, prizes, giveaways and drink specials. Enjoy their always-awesome guacamole, made tableside ($14), or share some queso fundido with garlic shrimp and chiles ($11.75) as you get your fiesta on!

Jefe's Original Fish Taco and Burger
has teamed up with Dos Equis for a Feast of the Brave promotion this Cinco de Mayo. In case you've tired of the typical "chicken, pork, or beef" in your taco, check out Jefe's truck (disguised as the Feast of the Brave truck), for something a little, well, braver. Jefe's, along with taco trucks in five other cities are serving up tacos with nontraditional fillings such as crickets, scorpion, and shark. On the menu in Miami? goat, frogs legs, and snails with corn fungus. There's also a special mystery meat taco if you're feeling extra brave. Do you dare? Check out @staythirsty or @jefesoriginal #DosEquisFeast #Miami to find out where the truck is. The Feast of the Brave runs today through Cinco de Mayo. Oh, by the way -- the brave tacos are FREE, so get your feast (and your bravery) on! Here's a video explaining the awesomeness:
