55. Cheese Plate at The Cheese Course

There is something eminently civil about sitting down over a bottle of wine, a plate of artisinal cheese, some crusty baguette and perhaps a bowl of olives. And there is no better place to do this in Miami than at The Cheese Course. There are some 150 cheeses culled from cow, sheep, goat, water buffalo and god knows what else to consider for your customized cheese plate. Some carry the names of their indigenous provinces, others have monikers that sound like rock bands or drugs (Red Dragon, Purple Haze, Humboldt Farm, etc.). The cheeses are categorized into six types: fresh, bloomy rind, washed rind, blue, semi-hard, and hard. Menu descriptions can help you decide, as can requested samples from the accommodating staff.


Choose a cheese (or two or three or more), add an accompaniment (chutney, fruit slices, tapenade, etc.), and you're set. One cheese is $7.95, two is $10.95, and onwards and upwards. Crusty slices of baguette will come alongside. As for the wine -- again, your choice. Select from global bottles racked around the room (or enjoy one by-the-glass for under $10)& and settle into one of the comfortable chairs -- indoors or outside. There are four locations to choose from, but we fancy the one in Midtown. There is also a bistro menu of salads, sandwiches and such to select from, but when in cheese-land we go with the cheese.
