42. Deep-Fried Biscuit at the Pit Bar-B-Que
The Pit is an Eighth Street landmark. Situated just east of the Miccosukee Casino, it is Calle Ocho's westernmost sit-down restaurant before Krome Avenue, where Eighth Street becomes the Tamiami Trail and heads into Indian country. Over the years, we've awarded the Pit with Best Fried Catfish and Best Barbecue, and that's because the Pit smokes everything for two-and-a-half hours before it goes on a wood-burning grill that uses only blackjack oak and apple from North Carolina. But the deep-fried biscuits are what really make the meal. They're slightly crunchy on the outside, soft as angels inside, sort of sweet, sort of salty, sort of greasy, but not too greasy, and you run them through a puddle of barbecue sauce mixed with slaw for an even better flavor.
