Yet another of Florida's "big three" college football teams will be coach-less as Urban Meyer is expected to his announce his resignation as coach at the University of Florida at a press conference later this afternoon. From a statement Meyer has already released it seems that the decision is linked to Meyer's ongoing health concerns, and not the Gators' disappointing 7-5 record this year.
From a statement released by the University:
"I have been a Division I football coach for the last 25 years and, during that time, my primary focus has been helping my teams win titles," Meyer said. "I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and I am a fierce competitor to my core. At this time in my life, however, I appreciate the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field. The decision to step down was a difficult one."Meyer came to UF in 2005, and racked up a pair of national titles and SEC championships in his time there. Previously he coached at Utah and Bowling Green.
Meyer had previously announced his resignation last year, but quickly changed his mind and instead took a leave of absence. He was back on the sidelines this year.
This announcement, like last years, appears to be related to Meyer's health. Meyer was admitted to a Gainseville hospital shortly after his teams loss in the the 2009 SEC Championship game. Meyer linked many of his health problems to stress.
While trying to rebuild from the loss of star QB Tim Tebow, the Gators had a disappointing 7-5 season. The same record racked up at Miami by Randy Shannon who was fired following a loss to USF.
No word on Meyer's replacement, but it should be interesting to see two of Florida's three traditional power houses on the hunt for a new coach at the same time. There may be a few candidates UM was looking at who may also have interest in the UF job.
