In today's roundup of the shame of South Florida: The caretaker of Jimmy Johnson's Keys mansion has a five-hour standoff with police, a man is shot for his necklace outside a day-care center, the house of a soldier serving in the Middle East is burglarized, and, oh yeah, the Metromover crashed.
Can life really be that bad if you're paid to take care of the oceanfront Keys home of former Hurricanes and Dolphins head coach Jimmy Johnson? Apparently, it was for one man.
Robert Twist Jr., 58, a caretaker who lives in a cottage of Johnson's Islamorada home, was involved in a five-and-a-half-hour standoff with Monroe County Police officers after they received reports of a suicide attempt. Two officers entered his cottage after no one answered. They found Twist, who then pointed a gun at them. One officer used a Taser, but it wasn't effective.
During the standoff, Twist reportedly yelled things like "Shoot me" and "Kill me." Finally, neighbors were able to persuade him to end the standoff peacefully. It's not clear if Johnson was home during the incident. [Herald]
