Sen. Frederica Wilson has put on her anti-FCAT hat today and proposed a bill that would make schools with large populations of Haitian students exempt from many FCAT standards this year.

Wilson believes the devastation in Haiti could have an adverse effect this year on students' scores , which are used to make decisions involving school funding, promotion, graduation and, in some cases, whether a school stays open.

Wilson's bill exempts schools where students of Haitian decent make up more than 40 percent of the population from those standards. Though students would still take the test. Many of those schools are in Miami-Dade, most of which would be within Wilson's district and the federal congressional district currently held by Kendrick Meek. Wilson is running to replace Meek as he makes a bid for the US Senate.
