What could the citizens of South Florida do with 146.6 million extra hours a year? We won't know until our serious traffic problems are tamed... so, basically, we will never know.
The Miami area ranked fourth in hours spent in traffic delays, according to a new study by the Texas Traffic Institute. That works out to about 47 hours -- nearly two days a year -- per citizen.
Traffic delays also cause us to waste about 33 gallons of gas a year per driver. That's nearly 102 million gallons throughout South Florida. Which translates to well over $250 million that goes to oil companies instead of local businesses or municipal projects like, say, fixing the roads.
