Our sister paper in Minnesota, City Pages, is reporting that state's governor, Tim Pawlenty has flip-flopped on the trade embargo with Cuba.
The reason: ambition.
Pawlenty would like to become John McCain's VP. The Repubnant Arizonan wants Miami Cubans' support. So Pawlenty contradicted his own agriculture secretary, who recently and publicly opposed the embargo, by coming out against more trade with the island.
Minnesota, you see, is a big agricultural state. And the embargo has hampered its exports. Indeed trade with the island -- largely agricultural -- increased by three times between 2002 and 2007....so look for a lot more candidate pandering before the whole thing is through.
