Controversial former All-Star slugger Manny Ramirez was arrested in Broward County earlier tonight on charges of domestic battery. Ramirez, 39, allegedly slapped his wife so hard she fell back and hit her head on the headboard in the bedroom of their Weston home. Updated.
According to Fox Sports, the couple was arguing before the incident. Ramirez's wife was afraid the violence would escalate, so she called police.
The wife had sustained injuries to the left side of her face but refused medical treatment despite swelling and redness.
Ramirez denied slapping his wife, but did say she fell on the headboard after he had grabbed her by the shoulder.
Ramirez was booked into a Broward County jail before 9 p.m. and will be held overnight.
He and his wife share their Weston home with their two children.
Ramirez retired from professional baseball earlier this year after he tested positive for banned performance-enhancing drugs for the second time in his career. He had most recently played for the Tampa Bay Rays.
