If there's one flying fear worse than your plane crashing, it's maybe the thought of falling out the door.
That's apparently exactly what happened to a man who was a passenger on a small plane today while the aircraft was flying southeast of Miami.
Around 1:30 p.m., the plane's pilot reported to the FAA that a passenger had fallen out. The incident happened about a mile offshore and eight miles from Tamiami Airport.
"We are still trying to ensure that it's a true report. We don't know for sure," U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios told NBC Miami.
The plane involved was a Piper PA-46. It's a small Florida-manufactured aircraft that carries a pilot and up to five passengers. The pilot returned to Tamiami Airport.
The Coast Guard has a marine unit searching for the man. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue has a helicopter and three boats on the scene.
