In South Florida, 92,112 workers take public transportation to work. Which sure sounds like a lot -- and indeed leads the state in pure numbers -- but with a workforce of more than 2,500,000 in the tri-county area, that means only 3.68 percent of workers use public transit, according to a new analysis by On Numbers.

That's good enough to make South Florida the most public-transport-happy large metro area in Florida, but we lag behind smaller areas in the state. Arcadia has a rate of nearly 13 percent, and Clewiston isn't far behind with 12.80 percent. On a national basis, the two rural areas ranked fourth and fifth respectively.

Unsurprisingly, New York City leads the nation with 30.46 percent of workers using public transportation. San Francisco is second with 14.56 percent.

Nationally, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach area ranks 41st.
