As if things couldn't get worse for the 1-9 Jacksonville Jaguars, one of their players got arrested for the stupidest crime recently committed by an NFL player in Miami Beach this weekend. Cornerback Dwayne Gratz was arrested early Sunday morning for showing up drunk to a South Beach convenience store and then trying to pay for his items with bubble gum.
Sometime in the early hours of November 16, Miami Beach police responded to a report of an intoxicated man causing a scene at one of the stores located in the Ocean Reef Apartments at 1136 Collins Ave. Inside, they found the 5'11", 24-year-old cornerback.
Gratz did not have money to pay for his items and tried to settle his debt by offering the clerk bubble gum. Bubble gum is of course not recognized as currency outside of some children's summer camps.
Though he was asked to leave by the clerk several times, Gratz refused. Police say he had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. Gratz then refused to leave even after he was asked by the Miami Beach PD. That's when he was cuffed and charged with disorderly intoxication and trespassing after a warning.
Gratz was processed and released by 6 a.m. that morning.
The Jaguars were on a bye week, and coach Gus Bradley has indicated that he'll face additional punishment from the team.
