A recent survey of 300 registered voters in Hialeah shows that "La Ciudad Que Progresa" thinks the president and Florida's governor both suck. The poll, paid by the Hialeah firefighters union, finds that 54 percent and 51 percent of the respondents disapprove of Obama and Scott, respectively. Obama received a slightly higher approval at 35 percent, while Scott got only 30 percent. Possible reason: Hialeah reported the highest unemployment rate of any other city in the state in June. Neither Obama or Scott has done much to bring that number down.

The poll also shows that Raul Martinez, who was Hialeah's honcho from 1981 to 2005, leads the city's interim mayor, Carlos Hernandez, by double digits in the mayoral showdown planned for November 15. The ex-alcalde's approval rating is more than 50 percent, the survey concludes. The only Hialeah politician with similar numbers is Julio Robaina, Martinez's successor, who was Hialeah mayor from 2005 until this past May, when he resigned, then ran unsuccessfully for county mayor.

Sixty-five percent of the voters polled also think the city's financial condition is either average or poor.
