We're used to former Miami Hurricanes players setting all sorts of records in the NFL, but the WNBA? Not so much. Well, Riquna Williams, only in her second year of playing professionally after being on the Hurricanes women's basketball team, just set the record for most points in a single game by a WNBA player.
Currently playing for the Tulsa Shock, the 23-year-old guard had a monster game yesterday against the San Antonio Silver Stars, scoring 51 points.
She bested the previous record of 47 points set in 2006 by by Phoenix's Diana Taurasi and matched by Seattle's Lauren Jackson in 2007. Just for good measure, she also tied the record for most three-pointers in a game with eight.
"It's amazing, I'm still speechless," Williams said according to The AP. "It feels great. This is only my second year in the league, so to capture that at such a young age and such a young player, it's amazing. And I shot it pretty well; it wasn't a bad shooting night."
Interestingly, William's former Hurricanes teammate Shenise Johnson was on the other side of the ball playing for San Antonio. The two were nicknamed "Fire and Ice" during their time at UM, and despite playing on opposing teams, Johnson was clearly proud.
"She had that LeBron [James] look, that Kobe [Bryant] look in her eye. Everybody moved out of the way and was out there getting it done," Johnson said.
