Just months before he decided to run for president, Donald Trump was the center of a much smaller controversy at the municipal level right here in Miami. The City of Doral went back and forth on whether to give Trump a key to the city for renovations he made to the historic Doral Golf Resort (now called the Trump National Doral Miami) before Mayor Luigi Boria made a last-minute call to give him the honor.

Well, now, after Trump's controversial remarks about Mexican immigrants, a city commissioner is set to introduce a resolution to revoke the key.

Let's rewind to the original controversy. In January, Boria decided to give Trump the key, but then just hours later, the mayor declared, "Trump doesn't deserve my key."

Underlying this was a general sense among some residents that Boria was giving out a few too many keys to the city, and a lingering controversy because Trump had planted a row of trees on the resort property that blocked some residents' view of the golf course. The city also gave the Miss Universe Pageant $2.5 million to host the event there.

However, only two weeks later, Boria introduced an emergency motion before the city council to award a key to Trump after all.

Now, Political Cortadito reports that Doral Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz will introduce a resolution to revoke the key for Trump's “racist, derogatory” remarks about Mexican immigrants. Doral has a population that is about 80 percent Hispanic.

Of course, the golf resort Trump now owns was originally designed as the centerpiece of the town, making him one of the most important businessmen in Doral. According to his financial disclosure, the Trump National Doral Miami is also the multibillionaire's single most profitable business. It earned him $50 million last year.

So the golf town and the business clown have a strange symbiotic relationship. (Even stranger when you remember that Univision, Trump's apparent arch enemy of the year, also keeps its major production facilities in Doral.) However, many residents still want that key revoked, but as Political Cortadito points out, a lot of them are still simply angry about that row of trees and the $2.5 million handout.
