Miami Beach police responded to a tense scene last night at 7801 Abbott Ave. in Miami Beach. After responding to a domestic disturbance report, police noticed that the place was ablaze. A mattress had been set on fire in a hallway.
During their investigation the suspect, 22-year-old Edwin Innis, was standing on the fifth floor of the building and threatened to jump.
Police responded to the incident at 5:11 p.m. yesterday. They talked to Innis' mother, but then noticed that her apartment was on fire. Meanwhile, while talking to the mother, Innis managed to leave the scene.
According to the arrest report, police located a burned mattress in a hallway.
Innis then returned and climbed outside the railing on a fifth floor balcony. He threatened to jump, but hostage negotiators were called in and managed to talk Innis down and arrest him without further incident.
After being booked, Innis admitted to police that he did indeed light the mattress on fire and had poured alcohol on it before sparking the flame.
He now stands charged of first-degree felony arson.
Innis is still being held at Turner Gilford Knight and is bond has been set at $25,000.
Innnis occupation is listed as "student" on a MBPD arrest form, and according to a LinkedIn profile he studies at Miami Dade College. He also appears to be training as a dancer and is active in the local dance community. Some of his work can be found in the video below.
