This morning former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chad Johnson pleaded not guilty to charges that he head butted his estranged wife Evelyn Lozada after the two got into an argument when she found a receipt for condoms in his car. The Broward State Attorney's Office had officially filed the misdemeanor charge yesterday.

Johnson himself did not appear in court for his arraignment this morning, but his attorneys submitted a written not guilty plea on his behalf.

If convicted of the domestic battery charge, Johnson could face up to a year in prison.

Johnson has faced significant fallout following the incident. He was dropped from the Dolphins within days, and the meeting in which he was informed of the decision was broadcast on HBO's Hard Knocks.

Lozada also quickly filed for divorce in Broward County, and says she has not spoken to Johnson since.
