The hunt for a Mercedes-Benz that was carjacked Sunday ended today when the car crashed through a wall after a police chase. The story began yesterday when a man, traveling with his 2-year-old son, was carjacked at gunpoint and ended with a police officer shooting one of the suspects in the leg.
On Sunday, an unidentified man was removing his 2-year-old son from the back seat of the silver Benz when a man approached him from behind and placed a gun to his head. The robber fled with the car, and the victim reported it missing.
Miami Police spotted the car at 3 a.m. today, and a high-speed chase ensued. The chase ended when the car plowed through a fence, went airborne, and then crashed through the wall of a building at NW Seventh Avenue and 20th Street. Video from WSVN shows that about half the car became wedged into the side of the building, causing the car's back end to lift off the ground.
After the crash, the two suspects fled on foot. One was captured and arrested. A Miami Police officer shot the other suspect in the leg. That suspect was transported to Jackson Memorial with non-life-threatening injuries.
