Miami's status as Latin America's media hub keeps getting bigger. BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the global media behemoth, has now opened a new Latin America headquarters at Alhambra Circle in Coral Gables, bringing in more than 50 employees to run the service's sales and content distribution for a growing U.S. Hispanic and Latin America operation.
Blanco said the new headquarters, which officially opened on June 18, receives content mostly from the UK and currently operates three channels: BBC Entertainment, BBC HD, and CBeebies, aimed at preschoolers. By the end of this month, they'll add BBC Mundo, the Spanish-language version of the network.
"We have big ambitions for Latin America and the new Headquarters are our launch pad," BBC Worldwide global markets president Paul Dempsey says in a release.
The Brits aren't the only ones staking a claim in Miami to the burgeoning Latin American media market. Several other high-profile South Florida media ventures have launched in recent months.
Fusion, the television collaboration between ABC and Miami-based Univision, set up shop last October in a massive 150,000 square-foot Doral headquarters. CNN Latino, a Spanish-language version of the cable news channel, debuted in August 2013, although it folded this February.
Univision and Telemundo, the country's two dominant Spanish-language channels, have both made their home in Miami since the 1980s. (Univision remains headquartered in New York but has production operations at its Doral studios.)
