Al Franken Finally Wins, Karma Makes Up For 2000 Florida Election Fiasco

The Minnesota Supreme Court has unanimously declared Al Franken the winner of the 2008 Minnesota Senate race. The Minnesota Supreme Court has unanimously declared Al Franken the winner of the 2008 Minnesota Senate race. Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty is widely expected to certify the results and send the SNL-alum to the highest legislative body in the land. The win will give Democrats a filibuster proof 60 seat majority in the Senate. Update: Politico reports Franken's opponent Norm Coleman has conceded.

The eight month battle over the results rivaled Florida's 2000 election fiasco in share lunacy, and crushed in terms of sheer length. In terms of partisan politics, it might not make up for 2000, but Democrats can finally (hopefully...) put this one in the win column.

It's kind of weird, yet magical that the man who brought us Stuart Smalley could provide the votes that impact the laws and history of this country. Then again comedy does take a certain level of smarts, and there's more than a few senators who can barely put together a knock-knock joke.

Now the wait is on until 2011 while we eagerly await for Franken to say hilarious things about Charlie Crist on the Senate floor.
