An 80-year-old man suffering from advanced Alzheimer's disease stabbed his wife to death Sunday afternoon at their home in Southwest Miami-Dade — and then drove to Publix to report it, police say.

According to police, Abner Peckman Lawton stabbed his wife multiple times at their home near SW 90th Street and 103rd Avenue. Then, with blood still covering his body, he drove to the Publix on 107th Avenue, asked to use the customer service telephone, dialed 911, and reported his crime.

He told the dispatcher where he was and that he believed his wife was dead at their home after the noon attack.

NBC Miami reports that police arrived to find a bloody Lawton still waiting in the Publix parking lot. The wife's body was found with multiple stab wounds. The wife's identity and age have not yet been released.

Lawton was arrested on charges of second-degree murder.

Investigators have not yet been able to establish a motive but note that Lawton's Alzheimer's is severe.

He appeared in bond court this morning, but his hearing was rescheduled for tomorrow. He's being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
