We've always wanted to just hop in a time machine and transport ourselves back to the height of a different musical era -- you know, jazz in the '20s, British pop in the '60s, funk and R&B music in the '70s. Well, now thanks to Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, we can get a taste of down-and-dirty soul funk.
Few can resist Sharon Jones. Her full-bodied voice is the perfect prescription for soothing an aching my-(wo)man's-done-me-wrong heart. And if you just want a '60s or '70s flashback -- well, she's good for that too. No poodle skirt or disco jumpsuit needed, just plenty of eyes-closed ass-shaking.
But no, Jones and co. haven't been making music that long. The band released its first full-length, Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, in 2001. It's the kind of music your parents probably dug, but with a made-just-for-us feel.
On March 20, Jones and her Dap-Kings will be coming to the Fillmore Miami Beach. But will the nine-strong collective have what it takes to overpower and fill the Fillmore? We think so. After all, even the outfit's music videos look like they were filmed back when black-and-white TV was all we had, and they're trying to open the eyes of a new generation.
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. Sunday, March 20. the Fillmore Miami Beach, 1700 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. Ticket prices and sales TBA, via ticketmaster.com.
