After spending the mid-1970s repeatedly slapping the Queen with the knobby end of his spit-soaked Sex Pistol, pioneering British punk John Lydon (AKA Johnny Rotten) decided to take a break from all that endlessly snarling controversy.
So he started Public Image LTD in 1978. "[The original idea was] not to run into the scandal side of journalism," Lydon recently told Rolling Stone. "To make the music and the message therein more important than the press scandalization, which [Sex Pistols manager] Malcolm McLaren loved."
And as a result of this drama-free philosophy, Lydon and PiL lasted 14 years before breaking up. (That's almost five times the Pistols' life span.) But now Public Image LTD is reunited, releasing new noise like This Is PiL, and touring across our continent.
