Metallic Brutality: Shroud Eater, Masticator, Orb Weaver, and Slashpine at Beelzebub's Cave

They also have the best names for their venues. You know, any shmuck can give you a flyer. Or, I guess, invite you on Facebook to a show featuring The Bores at Wherever. But how about when some longhair gives you the password to get into a gig at Beelzebub's Cave featuring Masticator and Orb Weaver. Sounds a lot cooler, huh?

Well, you've got local metal trio Shroud Eater to thank for livening up the contents of your dayplanner this Friday. Or, I guess, your Google Calendar.

The group hosts the aforementioned, ridiculously named ensembles for a metal showcase of the highest order. All of the bases are covered. Shroud Eater rep doom-laden, pounding sludge metal, ideal for headbanging, fist-pumping, and exhaling very, very slowly.

Orb Weaver and opening act Slashpine both contribute unique takes on the ever-burgeoning black metal style. The former takes the Norwegian thrash idiom to ethereal, psychedelic regions, while the latter pair formalist black metal shredding with post-rock interludes and crescendos.

And then there's West Palm Beach's Masticator, who FloridaDeathMetal.com describe as master pureyors of the classic death metal style ubiquitous in the Sunshine State in the 1980s, despite the fact that much of the band were still in diapers when the genre was taking Florida by storm.

Seems like a bit of a South Florida metal renaissance is developing. And if this show is any indication of band-names-to-come, we can't wait for further literary brutality.

Masticator, Orb Weaver, Shroud Eater, and Slashpine. Friday, May 6. Beelzebub's Cave, 164 NW 20th St., Miami. The show starts at 8 p.m. and cover costs $3.
