Last night, walking into the lobby of the decadent Fontainebleau Miami Beach as Laidback Luke's Super You & Me got underway, I had to remind myself ... It's only Wednesday.
With Winter Music Conference and Miami Music Week underway, the party's straight raving and raging. So scores of dedicated fans -- some in superhero attire -- swarmed Super You & Me scene at the Fontainebleau's ultra-exclusive LIV.
As the official hype explains, "Super You & Me is the event where you can test your X-ray goggles, take your jet engine boots for a test drive ... and bust out some break-dance moves to make this party of superman proportions."
Tickets were totally sold out. By 1 a.m., tables with a $2000 minimum were unavailable. And it was impossible to find an inch of open space on the dance floor as Madeon, Zedd, and Mitch de Klein shredded the sound system.
But as rad as all the opening jocks were last night, it was all about our Laidback leader. As hardcore club partier Fady Khella screamed in our ear, "Let's not kid ourselves, we're here to see Luke! These opening acts really warmed the crowd up and got the party going at full speed, though."
And by the time the opening acts were done at around 2 a.m., the mob was primed for a getdown with the man in the green mask.
Almost straight outta some adult comic book, the Manila-born, Holland-raised Luke emerged to screams and fistpumps, accompanied by a glowstick-wielding guy on stilts. And then to accentuate an already hyperdramatic entrance, a ton of confetti coupled with powerful blasts of cool fog at the crowd as Mr. Laidback's first break dropped.
The show didn't end there. Luke and his accomplices periodically showered the crowd with glow sticks and huge "No. 1" foam hands with the world-renowned DJ's name sprawled on them. Luke, who was ranked No. 20 on DJ Mag's Top 100 DJ list in 2011, played a varied selection of underground electronica mixed with bursts of traditionally commercial tracks like Rihanna's "We Found Love" and even Jay-Z's and Kanye West's "Nigg*s in Paris." The crowd hardly dissipated as the night commenced, the club still packed when the lights went on. Fans were far from dissatisfied when the set finally ended in the wee hours of the morning.
