Born in Montreal, Quebec of Haitian stock, Omicil's style has been likened to jazz greats Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis. Ever the innovator, he takes these comparisons and influences and translates them into the Afro-centric diasporas. There are hints of Brazil and Afrobeat.

But what's most endearing about this young man is his philanthropic work in the areas of music education with at-risk youths and as mentor and tutor in a multitude of schools between Massachusetts and New York which is reminiscent of the late great Billy Higgins' work with The Young Jazz Giants.

This week Omicil and his group, The Core, featuring the piano work of Chris Cadenhead, drummer Harvel Nakundi and bassist Carlos Alabaci, will be delighting audiences in the steadily growing jazz corridor of South Beach between Jazid on Tuesday night and The Van Dyke Café on Thursday night.
