Early yesterday afternoon, Crossfade received word via mass text that punk rock trio Beings would be performing their final show tonight at Bardot.
When we contacted drummer Beatriz Monteavaro, she couldn't offer any insight into the situation beyond that the gig was an engagement booked prior to the breakup and would be fulfilled out of professional obligation.
Despite the bizarre circumstances -- little notice, opening for Puerto Rican garage outfit Davila 666, and hosted by the chi-chi Midtown lounge Bardot -- this is a performance not to be missed.
Eulogy after the cut.
The group's sudden disbandment comes after a two hearty years of activity that included touring with stoner-pop megaliths Torche, releasing a self-titled CD that Crossfade dubbed one of the best of 2010, and becoming a cornerstone of Miami's live rock circuit.
Beings played everywhere (Churchill's, The Vagabond, Harvey's, Bar, Beelzebub's Cave, Chum Bucket, the main stage at Sweatstock) with everyone (Jacuzzi Boys, the Vivian Girls, punk bands, metal bands, indie rock bands) and always with robust volume and visible gusto.
In a musical climate that generates little original rock music that doesn't follow an easily spat-out genre tag -- "Oh, they're a garage/punk/metal/fill-in-the-blank band" -- Beings will be sorely missed.
Beings' Last Show with Davila 666 and Artime. Wednesday, May 25. Bardot Miami, 3456 N. Miami Ave., Miami. Doors open at 9 p.m. and cover costs $5. Call 305-576-7750 or visit bardotmiami.com.
