Television icon Andy Griffith is dead.
The 86-year-old actor who played The Andy Griffith Show's Sheriff Andy Taylor died at his North Carolina home earlier today, triggering an outpouring of online tributes.
"His pursuit of excellence and the joy he took in creating served generations and shaped my life," tweeted Ron Howard, who played Griffith's son on The Andy Griffith Show. "I'm forever grateful."
Even though Griffith made his name as an actor, his passion for music was no mystery.
Griffith wanted to be an opera singer, according to People magazine. But he turned to acting while attending college. Moreover, the whistling theme to The Andy Griffith Show is one of the most recognizable songs of all time.
