Television icon Andy Griffith is dead.

The 86-year-old actor who played The Andy Griffith Show's Sheriff Andy Taylor died at his North Carolina home earlier today, triggering an outpouring of online tributes.

"His pursuit of excellence and the joy he took in creating served generations and shaped my life," tweeted Ron Howard, who played Griffith's son on The Andy Griffith Show. "I'm forever grateful."

Even though Griffith made his name as an actor, his passion for music was no mystery.

Griffith wanted to be an opera singer, according to People magazine. But he turned to acting while attending college. Moreover, the whistling theme to The Andy Griffith Show is one of the most recognizable songs of all time.

As a tribute, here are five songs that whistle.

Ying Yang Twins' "Whistle While You Twurk"

There's something comical about a woman whistling while she makes that ass clap, no?

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros' "Home"

It's one of the most infectious indie tunes of all time. But Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's "Home" also holds the distinction of being one of the most covered songs on YouTube. Don't believe us? Search it.

Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks"

Clearly, nobody's ever really listened to the lyrics, because only in America can a song about a homicidal teen become a breakthrough hit.

Peter, Bjorn, and John's "Young Folks"

Peter, Bjorn, and John are great. But "Young Folks" has to be the absolute worst ringtone ever. Thank god that musical alert phase of the mid 2000s is over.

Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy"

This song's a good reminder to folks struggling with First World problems (like reading that it's 99 degrees outside on your air-conditioned car's temperature gauge), just "be happy." At least you're not dead like an American icon.

Rest in peace, Sheriff Andy.
