If you are a passing fan of Edgar Wright's movies Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, you'd be forgiven for not knowing that the movies share a common thread beyond the director and stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The two movies, plus this weekend's opening film The World's End, form a trilogy called the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy. But they're not linked by character, by plot, or by theme.
No, the trilogy is named after the British frozen treat that has somehow made an appearance in each of the movies. And tomorrow, South Florida has a chance to taste all three flavours in one place.
Shaun of the Dead features Simon Pegg's Shaun eating a red strawberry Cornetto, while Hot Fuzz uses a blue original flavor. During a Hot Fuzz press tour, someone pointed out the coincidence to Wright, and he ran with it. The last movie in the trilogy, The World's End, has a green mint chocolate chip Cornetto.
In honor of The World's End premiere, select AMC and Regal theaters around the country are showing all three movies, back to back: Shaun of The Dead at 5:30 PM, Hot Fuzz at 7:30, and The World's End premiere at 10 p.m. Tickets cost $20.
But of course, it's not about the price -- it's about nerding out with a trio of modern geek comedy classics. Shaun of the Dead parodied zombie films well before parodying zombie films was cool, and it's still one of the best examples of the genre. Hot Fuzz gave the same treatment to the stereotypical buddy cop film, with similarly hilarious results (and an added dose of Bill Nighy).
The World's End is, obviously, the newest of the films. We haven't seen it yet, but New Times reviewer Stephanie Zacharek called it "Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets Diner." Whatever that means, it's probably something you want to see.
Sitting through three feature films back to back is, well, a lot of time to spend in a dark room with questionably comfortable seating. Still, if you're a Wright superfan, it's the place to be. In Miami-Dade, the films are showing at Sunset Place AMC, Regal Kendall Village Stadium 16, and Regal South Beach Stadium 18. For more theaters (there are a few Broward options, too) and to buy tickets, check out the AMC listing, and the Regal Cinemas listing.
