Throb Thursdays is advertised as "the ultimate roller-disco club night."
When I imagined this roller-disco extravaganza, I pictured a packed room, filled with hipsters, all dressed to impress. Attendees are given a dress code: retro trash, disco punk, 80s glam. From what I saw, standard apparel included jeans and t-shirts.
The weekly event debuted June 7th and is targeted at young club go-ers. Throb is 17 and up, and most of the skaters there didn't look much older than that.
DJ Jorge Ojeda provided the music, which was mostly of the dance and disco variety. The room was dark, illuminated by flashing lights, and mostly empty. When I got there around 10, there were at most 30 people skating.
Throb, which is held at Superwheels, didn't look too much different from the run-of-the-mill roller-skating that takes place during the day and at birthday parties. The music may have been a little different, and the room a little darker, but it felt the same.
Maybe Throb is still gaining momentum, but it isn't the big party I envisioned. I was sorely disappointed not to find anyone dressed in "retro trash', whatever that is.
While Throb isn't exactly what I expected, it does offer a fun place to hang out on a Thursday night. -- Lauren Papiernik
